The Rachel McAdams character Amy Stone- How old was this brat supposed to be? I nearly spat my drink out when someone said "Amy is a teacher" I thought "Her a teacher"? How could such a childish manipulative little girl be a teacher for goodness sake? She wasn't "looking out for her brother either" she was just a nasty spiteful little girl.
The Mother- She prides herself on being "liberal" yet is so judgemental on her sons choice of G/f. She only laid off Meredith, when Meredith decided to stand up to her. The mother was petty and wouldn't part with the ring as promised.
The way the all stood at the window, gorping at Meredith, was just plain rude. I mean who does that? The Dad was annoying too, but at least he went looking for her to apologize. Okay Maredith was annoying too, uptight and said the wrong things sometimes but her heart was in the right place which is more than could be said for the horrible family Stone. Ben was probably the nicest of the bunch, wasn't keen on Meredith's sister either. Also Everett was a tool, deciding he loves the sister after talking to her for about an hour?
I saw this over the weekend and agree. They were a bunch of azzholes. The mom was terrible. I also found the gay deaf brother to be ridiculous. He would not have been so darling in real life.
I think the writers should have spent more time giving each family member just a little more background story, which could help explain where they are coming from and perhaps they would be easier to sympathize with.
Yes I think Ben was nice one and the mother and Amy to be pretty bad but I don't think the rest were all that bad.mi think the family knew Everett wouldn't be happy with her and wanted him to see that. They could have done it in a nicer way but then we wouldn't have he movie. And after Meredith said that insultingly awkward thing about the deaf, gay son at dinner, she left out of embarrassment and they were all basically concerned. If they were so awful, I think they would be happy she left and not give it a second thought but they all pretty much reacted immediately to help her.
I don't think in other situations that they would be horrible. in this particular scenario, Everette is the oldest and obviously no one is good enough for him. I, being a younger sister to the "precious oldest son," know how it feels to dislike someone simply bc they are "taking away" your brother, son, etc. Even Patrick mentions how Amy hated him in the beginning too. I think this movie just shows how it really is when you're coming into a really tight knit family. As far as Sybil goes, she knows that Meredith isn't right for her son and is angry she won't be around to comfort him when his marriage fails and she is gone. As a mother, I can understand that one. it would be hard in general to let your child make mistakes but even worse if you knew you wouldn't be there to pick them up after their inevitable fall.
I hated every character in this movie. Not one of them was likeable save for the black boyfriend and the granddaughter, but if they gave them more lines I probably wouldn't like them either. What a turd of a movie.
And you have named the reasons why this film has bad reviews. I like some scenes. But the director put his faith in the Meredith character being the only butt of the jokes. And while that might work, the other characters were no shiny stars of morality.
If we can save humanity, we become the caretakers of the world
Look at each character and tell how each one is terrible. Okay, Amy is, but then she's mean to everyone apparently. And take note that how Amy describes Meredith is spot on, everything Amy says is true. (And yes, I've seen teachers like Amy. I had a young, 20-something, stuck-up B***h for a math teach in high school one year. Good teacher, but cold as ice. And she was newly married too.)
Does Kelly, the father, say or do anything bad toward Meredith? No, he doesn't. He seems a nice, friendly guy.
Does Susanna, the pregnant sister, do or say anything negative? No, she doesn't. Her daughter, well, she's a child and doesn't know better.
Does Thad and Patrick do or say anything against Meredith? No, they don't.
Sybil, the mother, is nice for a while but she quickly tires of Meredith. She can clearly see that Meredith and Everett are not meant to be together, rather quickly. It's as obvious to her as it is to us. Why should she give over a unique ring under those circumstances? (Put yourself in Sybil's shoes for a minute. She's dying, she knows this will be the last Christmas the whole family will have together. And in walks Everett, the prodigal son, with an awkward girlfriend which nearly ruins the holiday. How happy would you be? Don't you think she's under a little bit of pressure?)
Ben is the nicest, of course. But then he's so laid back he's nice to everyone. Whether Meredith and Ben are destined to marry we don't know, but a year later they are still together and apparently she has loosened up some, so... maybe.
So you are saying that when you are a parent and your child brings home a loved one you won't be judgmental? Good to know, we'll see how that works out in practice.
As for standing at the window scene, I can see some doing that. Mine wouldn't have done that, but some would.
I like the family, wouldn't mind be a part of it. I like the town too, seems like a nice place to live.
It's not a perfect family, but none are. It's not a perfect film, but none are.
Apart from the dad and Elizabeth Reaser, the rest of the family is pretty much terrible. They didn't let us get to know any of the characters well enough to think that they were redeemable people, so while you can somewhat see the larger point the filmmakers are trying to make, they failed to hit that mark. The final product tries to excuse the bad behavior of its characters by throwing in the death of the matriarch - yes, they end up happy, but again, they're all crappy selfish people so its impossible to care.
What else would you expect from ridiculous liberal filth like this? This movie probably was one of Obama's wet dreams, all they needed was some Muslim terrorists.
I agree! The only stereotypical liberal dream not represented here is a Muslim or two! And maybe a Mexican bringing some illegal relatives for the awful mother to stick up for and try to set up with Amy, Ben and Everett (the single siblings) so her lib dream of mixing more and more races could become a reality before she went to that groovy Woodstock in the sky.
