Why did Everett try to beat his brother up?

Everett's brother (Luke Wilson) made it clear he didn't have it away with Meredith, yet Everett still laid into him. Why? Let's face it, Everett didn't love Meredith did he?

Everett tried to beat up his brother because this movie is terrible. It makes no sense. So Everett trying to beat up his brother makes no sense.
