Why Everette and Julie are late?

I have watched this about five times and stiil my only question is why are Everette and Julie excluded from the last scene? We only hear that they arrive and see a glimpse of them in the kitchen. Everyone else is there around the tree, why not them?

To keep the suspense running as long as possible on whether they're together.

They were supposed to be there on time, but Julie's bus was delayed. Apparently a couple doing something romantic held up the bus for everyone else at an earlier stop.
