I never mentioned how much I hated this movie when it first came out, but they keep replaying it on television and it reminds me of how much I hate it!
Could this family be anymore rude, nasty, holier than though, pretentious???...ugh! just every nasty word you can think of ....that's what I think of The Stone Family!
So they don't like someone because she is uptight and wears her hair up in a bun and isn't who they want for their precious Everett?...by the way...what a joke of a man he is!!
A houseguest is treated soooooo horribly and her sister takes off with her fiance and we are all supposed to be okay with this???? are you kidding me????
aaaw such wonderful holiday cheer....give me a break!
May this movie rot in cable limbo until it phases out forever!
I totally agree. I originally saw it when it was in theatres and have purposely not seen it at anytime again, simply because it was a very meanspirited movie, and most of the characters were dreadful. The only characters I liked were Meredith and Ben. I liked Ben because he was openminded and was a bit of a black sheep in the family. But the rest of the family really came down hard on Meredith, and the funny part is that she was actually much nicer, more polite, and more respectful than they were. She just had some quirky personality traits and seemed very nervous, and the family used her personality to make her feel completely unwanted. That was one cold a** family. The mother, played by Dianne Keaton, was the worse one of the bunch, and frankly, I did not care that she had cancer. She didn't evoke any sympathy or compassion in me because of her self-righteous attitude. She is the typoe of mother who goes around thinking that her family is much better and more evolved than everyone else's, and that their sh*t don't stink.

I agree as well, this story was just bad and the characters were worse. The whole story really didn't seem to make any sense, it was predictable and boring. I actually liked the Merideth character more than any other members of the family especially Cybill (Diane Keaton) and I also like her more than her sister Julie (Claire Danes). This movie could have been better but I don't think the characters and their relationships were developed enough, just seems like a lot of the scenes and dialogue were thrown together.

I don't understand how a movie can be both predictable and not make any sense. Did you predict that it wouldn't make sense?
Anyway, I didn't like Meredith - she was an uptight prude - but I really didn't like anyone else either. I was hoping that Julie would have the common sense to get on that bus and get the f* outta dodge, but she comes back and steals her sister's man. And at the end, everyone seems hunky dory with Meredith being with Ben, so I guess all's well that ends well? WTF?
This movie was *beep* I could write much more but it's not worth it.
I so hate how people use the word prude, but don't know the actual meaning of it. Like most people love to using words they don't know the meanings of. I don't think there was anything wrong with Meredith. She was being her. I don't think she was uptight, just someone hard to get to know.
I liked this movie, the first time I watched it. But now, watching it for the second time, I have to wonder why. The Stone family was nothing more than a bunch of rude, obnoxious jerks. I cannot believe how they treated Meredith. They talked about her behind her back, and were rude to her face. The harder she tried to fit in, the worse things got. The parents pretended to be liberal free-thinkers, but they refused to allow Meredith the freedom to express herself. Personally, I don't understand why she bothered to stay for the holiday. She put up with way more abuse than she deserved.
I bought it from the $5 bin at Walmart, thinking it might be worth a watch. Nope. Not at all. It's very presumptuous and none of the characters are likable. Even the ones who you know are supposed to be, they just aren't. Like the deaf brother and his partner. They're the most sympathetic characters but they don't have that much of a role, really. So it doesn't make much difference. It actually a isn't poorly written film, but it's such a wretched story to begin with.
Then to add more frustration, the fact the whole thing was such a waste. Since she ends up with his brother, her ex-boyfriend then with her sister. How much torment she went through for nothing. And as if they could all be so understanding and accepting of that arrangement.
Gah! There just wasn't anything redemptive or inspiring about it. Nothing to relate to or be moved by, at least IMO.
I agree, there was nobody likeable in this movie and I didn't like Ben either. The mother was supposed to be sympathetic because she was dying, but she was so cruel and judgmental that I did not care when she died. Everett had about as much personality as a cardboard cut out. That's really the actor though. The dried up paint on my wall has more charisma than this mannequin. Couldn't they have gotten somebody better for this role? And what was so special about the sister that they were falling all over themselves welcoming her into their home when they treated Meredith like pure trash from the moment she walked in the door?
@jayhn1111, it's funny how a lot of people say what you said about Dermot Mulroney's acting, that he is pretty much like a cardboard cut out. I definitely agree with this. And he tends to play the same type of character, too. Pretty face but not much substance.

I agree - this movie is actually my least favorite movie of all time (it dethroned Natural Born Killers.) I can't stand movies where a fiance/boyfriend/girlfriend gets brought home and the boyfriend/girlfriend doesn't stand up for them - Meet the Parents has this flaw as well, but it's not nearly as bad. This group of people are absolutely vile - I'd never put up with them and would simply leave. And she brings in her sister for moral support and winds up getting betrayed by her. What a horrible movie and I was glad when the mother died - I only wished what she had had was contagious and the rest of her hateful clan had caught it as well.
I agree, this movie is horrible, the family is horrible and Meridith's sister is horrible. If my sister ran out and crashed the car and I was sitting with a family that I just met, I would run after my sister, but the bitch just stayed there. I hated her more than the horrible family.
none of the characters were likable except Ben and the boyfriend of the deaf guy. Everyone else was horrible.
I watched it because I usually enjoy Diane Keaton and I usually enjoy Craig Nelson and I usually enjoy Holiday Movies...
this film was deplorable! The characters were so extremely selfish, hateful, and mean! Why would anyone in their right mind desire to be part of such a horrible family? I've never seen Keaton in such a horrible role.... I'd NEVER want to have her character as a mother or heaven forbid mother-in-law. They didn't even give Meredith a chance and then they made it worse and worse every chance they got. If I were Meredith, I would've left Everett the first day and blocked him from my life entirely. What a dismal film to say "Happy Holidays."
This movie was sooo bad! Barf... I saw this at the movies. I live in a college town where on Tuesdays it is 50 cent movie night & I wanted those 50 cents back!!! The acting, the script, Everything, I hated everything!
I watched (reluctantly) up to the dinner scene where they had the big argument. I turned it off; couldn't watch any more. They are a family of bigots who cannot accept other peoples differences. If the producers were trying to get their message across to the masses, then they failed miserably. This one is on my list to never revisit.
Caesar Jules I turned off at exactly the same scene. For me it was they couldn't accept that Meredith was entitled to her opinion. They didn't have to like it, but accepting that she thought differently to them just disgusted me. It really makes me wonder what writers are thinking sometimes. My family is as dysfunctional as the next, but we realise that there's a time and a place for that type of discussion, and Christmas ISN'T that time!
Someone mentioned that it was rude bringing up about raising a child in a homosexual environment at a Christmas dinner, but doesn't mention the fact that Meredith's sister brought up race. Frankly I think the reason why her sister bringing it up was acceptable is because they liked her more and were just being jerks to Meredith.
While I agree with everyone's reasons for hating this movie, the family was horrible, I still loved it. To me, part of the reason they were like that is that they were dealing with the pain of dealing with the mom's illness and that this would be their last Christmas together. Meredith got all this taken out on her for being the outsider. She was the common "enemy" that they could all actually do something about. They even knew they were being a-holes and were trying to stop themselves, but couldn't.

I know this is a million years too late but asking if the couple wanted a black or white child is different from asking if they were worried that their "gayness" would rub off.
That being said, I do agree that the family was determined to hate Meredith.
