Meredith- Most Unlikeable Character Ever?

Honestly, I have never disliked a character more than I did Meredith. I saw a "I liked Meredith" thread, but no thread solely discussing how completely aggravating a character she is.

Movie was absolutely terrible as well. Maybe one of the most contrived films I've seen over the past couple years.

She's not even close to being the most unlikeable character in this movie, much less ever.

I guess it's like looking at clouds. You see one thing and I see another. Peace.

She was inappropriate and awkward, but who wouldn't be, faced with all that?

I felt more for her than any of the others.

The deaf gay son and his black boyfriend were the limit for me. Ridiculous clichés. (And then the baby at the end. Don't gays have cats and a good time anymore?) I'm gay and liberal but that entire family made me want to vote GOP.

You suck at being gay and liberal.

Stop! Manners time.

Like parisel said, she's not even the most unlikeable character in this movie. Sure, she was socially awkward and uptight but from what I saw she wasn't deliberately trying to hurt anyone, unlike almost everyone in the Stone family. She was actually trying to get to know the people and be helpful but it seemed that she couldn't do anything right in their eyes because she wore her hair in a bun and wore fancy clothes. Let's see:

Sybil: Even before meeting Meredith she is telling the family how awful she is based on stories she's heard from Amy. All in all she's a prime example of these "liberal" people who say they don't judge other people but in reality they just accept people who are exactly like them. Throughout the movie she doesn't do one thing to try to relieve the tension between Meredith and the family but instead creates even more drama, for example by making Meredith stay in Amy's room even though Amy hates her already.

Amy: Makes the entire family hate Meredith before they've even met her. We never really find out what it was about Meredith that made her dislike her so much so we just have to assume that Amy was the type of person who just hates people for no reason. Apparently she even disliked Patrick before even though he's very kind and sweet. Just a straight up bully, and since the family doesn't do anything to tsp this bullying, they're no better.

Everett: Bring his girlfriend home for the first time and clearly sees that the family treats her horribly yet doesn't do anything about it. He just looks as this family tries to tear her apart and slowly starts to agree with them. Acts like he's all high and mighty when in fact he's just as bad as everyone else.

Thad: Mean towards Meredith from the minute she arrives. When she tried to be considerate and makes sure he would hear what she's saying, he just scoffs at her.Doesn't even try to get to know Meredith or like her but hates her from the beginning based on stories from Amy. And then tells Everett not to marry her, ugh.

The only people who were even somewhat likable were Kelly, Ben, Susannah, and Julie. Even they had their bad tendencies though. So all in all this film was filled with unlikeable people but Meredith is far from the worst.

She was just awkward and uncomfortable. She offered to help the mom, clean and cook a few times, only to be rudely rebuffed. The little brat girl, ruined a pair of expensive shoes, she didn't flip out. She tried to bond with the awful younger sister, several times, to only be rudely treated again. What was she supposed to do?

I mean even the deaf brother was pretty nasty himself.

Exactly....Meredith was no saint but compared to this feral family she was!!

Don't let anyone ever make you feel like you don't deserve what you want.

reply

No way! Meredith was just different, a little odd and awkward and uncomfortable with the family's laid back way of life.

But she tried to get along with them..she was always polite, respectful and tried to be accommodating. She was never once rude or stuck to them unless she has a reason to be..like when the bratty kid ruined her expensive shoes, or when Amy was being rude to her while getting coffee.
