To hear, or NOT to hear...

The scene where Meredith went off and told Everette that she slept with his brother! She whispered, "I slept with your brother" to Ev; he looked over at the deaf one (name escapes me now), and he says, "Do NOT look at me!" From where he was sitting when Meredith put her head to the side, and her hair fell covering her face; there's no way he heard her if he's deaf, and he wouldn't have been able to see her mouth it either!
And can someone explain why Everette thought getting married would save his mom from dying? Or am I mispeaking? Because he went ring shopping with his brother (the deaf one), and he asked Ev, "Is this about mom?". I'm confused.

Well, I don't think Everett thought getting married would save his dying mother. Since he was the oldest, I think he thought he was at a point in his life where he should be getting engaged & he desperately wanted to make his family proud. He was very stuck-up in the beginning of the movie i.e Amy loosening his tie & Sybil yelling at him to take the tie off. Then, as the movie progressed and he realized Meredith wasn't the one for him, he softened. Especially when he learned his mother's cancer was back.

As for Thad not hearing or seeing Meredith mouth that she slept with Ben, I don't think Thad was completely deaf, as he could speak in the movie. I'd have to watch the scene again though.

Thank you. I was confused on Everette's whole story line.

Before she whispered it, Meredith pretty much yelled that she slept with his brother. I'm sure Thad caught that with no problem. Everett then turns around and asks"You slept with who?", facing Thad directly. That's how Thad could tell what they were saying.

As far as "Is this about mom?" I took that as Thad questioning why they were out shopping for rings in the first place. Everett knew that Sybil didn't want him marrying Meredith and so refused to give him her mother's ring. Defiantly he goes out to shop for a ring anyway, still pissed at his mom for trying to control his life. Thad didn't know there was a rift between Everett and their mom, until he asked. Although I think he suspected something was up by the way he framed the question.

I took "is this about mom?" to imply a perceived need to rush into a marriage on Everett's part *for* his mom because of her condition...not cause he thought it would save her life though.

And Thad was just pointing it out because he saw what was going on and saw that Everett although at odds with his mom was still trying to please her with a marriage, as if to say "I'm gonna be ok"...even though the marriage was going to be with someone completely wrong. Which would've been worse which is why Thad checked him.

I felt it was more about the moms condition though because the next few scenes revealed more about it.

Just my take though
