shareHonestly it's a tie up between the sister Amy and the mother, Sybil. I guess since Sybil is dying we're expected to feel sorry for her (to an extent I do) but having terminal breast cancer is not an excuse to allow your sons' girlfriend be treated with disrespect in your own house by your own family. With Amy, I think she was jealous ecause Meredith had her life together and was "happy" where as Amy compounded with the lack of success in her life along with her mother's illness gave her an outlet/excuse to treat Meredith horribly.
shareAmy was a mean, brat. Even Patrick and her brother remarked how she didn't like Patrick for two years. She probably had a history of being mean to outsiders until she got to know them. She was not a likeable character but there were a few scenes where she did show a softer side.
They were all annoying.
shareAgreed...every last one of them but especially the Sarah Jessica Parker character. The way she started making those ignorant comments at the dinner table and the overacting that happened thereafter.
shareExactly! All of them were annoying with their leader as the mother, Sybil. The only ones that not were Susannah (the pregnant sister with the least lines to say among the whole family), her husband (which showed up late with about 2 seconds of screen time), and Brad (the ERT technician who screen time was also limited).
This is one rude and whacky family. The result is one of the worsts (if not the worst) Christmas movie ever in the history of Christmast family movie. NO people in their right mind would watch this movie a second time (especially during the holiday season), let alone having their families watching this together.
So funny, we just put the movie on now. The Family Stone is on the annual Christmas list with Home Alone, Love Actually, Just Friends, The Holiday.
shareI love this movie and watch it every Xmas. It’s both funny and touching. And I assure you I’m very much in my right mind.
shareSybil was a protective and caring mother who was torn by the fact that she was leaving her family way before she should have due to a debilitating illness.
Amy was unhappy because she wasnt with the one man she truly cared about (Brad) they weren't together and she has regretted itand has been sad/pissed off at the world ever since.
I LOVE this movie for its wit and candor and honest feelings on other people especially new comers who make their way into the family. It's raw and its how some people really feel when their oldest son/brother or anyone brings someone into their lives that may be a mistake or in some ways, an unseen blessing.
So that is my take on this movie. It can be harsh, but it is honest and in some cases what really happens.
The only character who bothered me was Amy. Not only was she a mean girl, but she reveled in fueling meanness in others. Her transformation at the end came on a little too abruptly, IMO, but I'm glad it happened.
shareAgreed! Everett was a drip!
shareI don't think the movie intended to portray anyone as a bad guy. But the way the story unfolded I couldn't help not liking Meredith and her lack of tact. Considering how uptight she was, you'd think she would have learned how to be less offensive. Instead she was cold and said some really stupid things.
I am not a SJP fan, except maybe from the sex and the city days as i loved that show overall but have always thought SJP was way overated because she is actually sort of ugly physically (sorry..horseface, never understand anyone who thinks she is attractive)
HOWEVER, this was a completely different role for her and I have to say that she did a stellar acting job at this. I have a sister in law who acts just like her (totally uptight, makes our entire family uptight when she is even in the room, makes us all dance around her schedule, tries way to hard to impress us all and talks too much..and we all sort of cringe when she is around...our poor brother...anyway....back to the movie)
when the dad says that Meredith does not "seem to know or trust herself very much" i thought, wow, it is my SIL exactly!!!! I always think that about her.
I have seen SJP in many roles over the years since she was in the original Footloose years ago and square pegs and this was her best role for acting like somebody she is not truly like in person. Even though she played an annoying character in this movie, i admire her for doing such a convincing job in the role and great acting chops.
I personally love this movie as holidays are not all Merry and awesome like people think. It can cause awkward/toxic issues to be even more awkward and this movie portrayed that great.
I loved Luke Wilson's Character " now dont dilly dally little lady, we are all going to be down here talking about you"....LOL!!!!!
I agree with you Lara. You said it all very well.
Great summation for the movie/character we just finished watching on Christmas! And SJP also did a great job in Miami Rhapsody in the 90s, another movie people either love or hate and which also revolves around family.
shareexcellent summation. I also thought Luke Wilson's character and his sister Susannna were very likable characters. The Dad wasn't bad either. I do not agree with your comments on SJP looks, I thought she was adorable in her 20s and she had (and still has) an incredible figure.
shareWell I guess she is not ugly However she is it pretty at all. She has an adorable personality in movies . I guess that is what makes her adorable. She does have a pretry good figure and always has however i see women like that daily but you need to put a bag over their head. SjP does have pretty eyes though . What matters most is she is not a typical Hollywood person who botoxes and hers fillers and fake lips , nose jobs, etc. I would have to say the fact she is not doing all that makes her beautiful in a way. Also, ever noticed that the "not so perfect looking actresses " are the ones who get the good roles. For instance, when Meg Ryan messed with her adorable face, her career went in the toilet. I think that is why most movies and TV shows feature British or Austrailaij actresses now. Because they don't mess with their faces :)
shareThey were all annoying including Amy and the mother. I felt sorry for Meredith.
