something that bothers me
does anyone think that austin was not the perfect guy? i mean, b4 he realized that he "loved" sam, he would never stand up to her when his friends made fun of her.

sharehe was unsure of his feelings i mean come on. he was kind of living a double life. online...he was this perfect guy, wanting to be a writer, but at school or whatever, he seemed confused.
OMG! THIS PLANE DOESNT EVEN HAVE A FILANGEE!
yeah, but he never joined in when they made fun of her. i think that shows enough merit on his part.

well, i know that he never tried to make shelby and all them stop making fun of sam, but he never joined in, either. we've got to give him credit for that. i think he wanted to say something but he just didn't know what. i mean, sometimes it's hard to stand up for what you believe in.
sharewell the night of the dance when he broke up w/shelby i think part of it was he didn't like how she talked to sam... its like that gave him the intiative to break up with her because she was so snotty...
life moves pretty fast... if you don't stop and look around once in awhile you could miss it.
Well what i think of him was that he was really a jackass. I mean he had a girlfriend and would spend about 4 or 5 (can't remember) hours online talking to this girl that he didn't really know, but supposedly "loved". It's like he was cheating on his girlfriend, altough i have to say if i had a girl/boyfriend like that i would probably do it too, it's not like she was that great of a persona.
shareActually he just made a friend online when he was going out with Shelby. When he knew he liked his online friend over Shelby, he knows he had to break up with her. Shelby took it the wrong way, so Austin went with Hilary.

Thank you ariel5225 and a few replies before her. Finally someone agrees with me on this. I don't think Austin was a bad guy at all. When his friends laughed at her after they occupied the parking spot, Austin didn't join them, even though he was the one driving. Besides, at least he knows how to park a car, unlike Shelby.
And another thing, when Sam and Austin passed each other in the hallway, I don't think he was ignoring her. He probably didn't notice her; he was preoccupied with the mystery woman from the dance, obviously not knowing she walked right past him. Plus, there was no mutual eye contact.
He was the BMOC in his High School. There are very difficult rules to being so in HS, and it's all he ever knew. You'd be hard pressed to find a TRULY genuine, honest, true-to-self person in the hormone and peer pressure teeming halls of a High School.

I wouldn't really know about the high school thing 'cause I was homeschooled, but like another poster said, Austin was confused about who he wanted to be. He was the most popular boy at school, football star with a gorgeous girlfriend with a future in football. He had his own desires---wanting to be a writer and reading Tennyson---but didn't know how to tell his father, who was pressuring him with the football thing. His dad had created a nice little "Austin box" and he wasn't sure how to break out of it, though you see him doing so in little ways throught out the movie, breaking up with Shelby, admitting to wanting a girl who was real, and then of course the big one: blowing off the game to after Sam when she was about to leave.
What's your name, son?
Zeke Robertson. And I ain't your son either.
Catch ya on the flip side.
I guess its trying to be a bit realistic. If you were Chad, whe you find out, you would have been like "Oh my cinderella, my one true love" would have you? Being a kid in high school is not easy, you cant go against your friends for a girl or a boy. But he did it in the end, didnt he? He quit his football and other stuff. I think they were great for eachother!

He could've been a little more charming, and a little more humble.
There were little quirks that really bothered me and made me feel like he was NOT her Prince Charming. Like his e-mail reply saying something like, "Oh Did you run away because you found out I'm Austin Ames?" That was just a little egotistical.
Also when he walks into the diner, alone, and starts talking to 'diner girl' about his problems, etc. About his Dad and college, etc. He just seemed so full of himself. Like 'diner girl' would care??? He didn't know it was his princetongirl at the time, he just thought it was another nameless face that would give a crap about his problems.
The worst part was when the cheerleaders had that skit making fun of 'diner girl' and her being a 'fake princess'. He could've stood up for her especially since, in his mind, he's THE Austin Ames. Those ARE his friends, after all. What was he crying about anyways, in that scene?
IDK I liked Hilary's character but her love interest SUCKED.
I agree. Also what bothered me is why didn't the teachers or principle stop Shelby? What school would allow something like that to go on?
shareThose girls should've gotten in big trouble. Don't a lot of schools have bullying policies in place?
This movie is still a guilty pleasure though :)
Casper High. Don't you see how much the popular crowd is favored there? It's the same prinicple.
