Wait....problem with the earthquake scenario

The Northridge earthquake occured at 4:41am on January 17th, 1994. I was living IN Northridge when it happened and I was only 2. But...how come in the movie, everyone in their house is awake when the earthquake strikes AT 4 IN THE MORNING!...I'm so confused! I mean they were living in the valley when it struck so it seriously makes me wonder what the heck the whole family was doing awake at the time. Unless I'm missing something.

Like so many movies that have real events in them do, they probably just changed the time it occured to fit the timeline of their story.

lol. They should have made it more accurate so the people who still live in the valley (like me) won't question the writers. lol.

I was confused on how only the dad died. They were all in the house yet only he died, why?

I've always believed that he must've gotten hit by something when trying to save Fiona's cat...
