I love this film, but, what really annoys me is...

NOBODY could come up with a better insult than "Diner girl"?? Really? THAT's the worst they call her? It doesn't make sense, that isn't even an insult..she works in a diner, so what? She can't be the ONLY student at that school with a job!! Everything else I can overlook and laugh at, but that is just stupid...

They considered someone working in a diner below them, thus they thought the name "Diner Girl" would be insulting. They were probably rich, spoilt brats who have never had a job, so anyone who works, especially for them (as Sam had to do, taking their orders), were considered lowly. It's the old social hierarchy thing.

I only do it with superheroes.

nobody called Austin 'Carwash Boy'...hahaha

reply

I thought the same thing...it's not okay to be Diner Girl...but it's okay to be Car Wash boy.

You made an excellent point... And that made me think of the original insult: Cinderella. Cinderella wasn't really her name (pre-Disney). She was called Cinderella because she slept by the fireplace to keep warm and wound up covered in cinders as a result. In both the older story and the 2004 version, one feature of the heroine is what others focus on as "proof" that they are lesser than the rest.

Please don't feed the trolls.

That just really irritated me throughout the whole movie. Seriously are these kids retarded Sam has a *beep* name and it ain't *beep* diner girl.

Did you guys not go to school?

The unpopular kids got nicknames based on the easiest way to describe them without using their name, as names were only for the non unpopular kids.

From my year I remember there being a hat boy, kebab girl, books, and glasses. Not that I ever called them that.

Not particularly original or derogatory but that's life as a teenager.

I'm suprised you guys didn't experience that culture in school.
