SPOILER ALERT!!

So, After the guy gets robbed in Amsterdam, how did they go from one country to another without passports?

Passports are not required for most countries in Europe. There are so many countries close together and many roads in and out that it would take too many people and too work to check everyone. It's not like USA, Canada and Mexico. You might need it when you buy train and bus tickets but these guys hitchhiked and BS their ways through.

Yes and no. There are no internal border controls between EU countries anymore, except for the new ones that Denmark just put in. Not sure about Slovakia though, as I don't think they're were an EU member at the time. Get back to the US would be a much different story with a visit to a consulate or embassy.

Didn't they fly to Italy to finally meet with Mieke for which they would definitely need the passports?

In real life you'd go to your consulate for a temp passport.

Today in the EU there is no longer any border checks, so you can travel from Tallinn in Estonia all the way to Lisbon in Portugal without a passport.

You can also fly on most EU flights using just a driving license.... I live in the UK so I need my passport to fly, yet my German friend can just about use any ID he has to fly.

Couple of plot holes though... 2004 they would have needed a passport to get into Slovakia, as Slovakia only joined the EU that year and would be another 2 years before their borders were taken down.
