Opinion divided - LIKE MOST GILLIAM FILMS, LOL

I think it should be expected this film , as with so many other Gilliam films, is seen as a hit-or-miss with so manny people. That's more often than not the case with Gilliam films, isnt it?

He made Baron Munchausen FFS. Not to mention Dr Parnassus, another film I enjoyed a great deal. But watching it I knew it wasn't going to satisfy everyone.

But for me, what makes Gilliam films great is the SUBSTANCE. There's so much there, in the plot , script and not to mention.... the SETS.. the costumes... effects... always great.

Keep in mind this is a filmmaker who always tends to... go 'all out' .. with a concept, and once in a while will make something like Fear and Loathing, or Fisher King, or 12 monkeys, considered some of the best films ever. You cant make a film that good every time....... but you can try. And Gilliam does try to make good films... which is a lot better, in my opinion. than a director making something passable, which maybe has a plot that wraps up nicely, but... didnt try to do anything new or different.

It's true that his movies have substance, TBG is no exception. It looks great, but it somehow comes out like a Monty Python sketch, just like "Brazil" did. This one is a miss for me. I rated it 5/10

Budget:$88,000,000 (estimated)
Cumulative Worldwide Gross: $105,316,267

I agree... Gilliam is a true artist...

His films make most movies seem as if they were made by committee rather than being the product of a filmmaker and artists...

You know, thats exactly correct, and it explains what is both best and worst about Gilliam's films.

The best thing about him is that he's willing to go where other filmmakers are not, and when he gets it right the results are as strange, wonderful, and unexpected as a really good dream. The flip side of that particular coin is that he tries stuff that other filmmakers get talked out of, because they're bad ideas.

Which explains why all Gilliam's films are wildly uneven, especially this one. Honestly, I hate the first hour of this movie, but then beautiful and touching scenes start popping up, and it becomes worthwhile to watch.
