It's been a long time since I've seen this but all I can remember is how drab and hideous everything looked.

Yeah, the beauteous Monica Belluci disintegrating into tiny pieces! Her agonized shrieking is so believable!

It's the Grimm brothers fairy tales! They weren't happy, lovely stories so the 'ugly' appearance of the film (which wasn't actually ugly it was just dark and gothic) fits extremely well with the style of their stories!
