What happened to the mother?

I was just thinking about that. I really liked her character because she seemed to genuinely care about her daughters. Did this movie explain what happened to her? The relationship between the mother and father seemed crumbling in the first movie.

I just rented the DVD [not the collectors edition] from the local Rogers and the deleted scenes are in special features .. I was wondering what happened to the mom too, before I saw the deleted scenes, they really left you hanging there, and she's a great actress, too...
