In the first case with Jason and the bar, the problem was not that they were wasting time and fooling around. The problem was that it was a "site unseen" situation in which they had very little prep time. Jason did not have time to draw up plans for the bench and tried to wing it. However he hadn't done that in a long time and ended up making mistakes. The homeowner said on the TLC boards that Jason gave them instructions on how to finish it and they did it themselves. The wife said that they had all worked very hard. John has said before doing the episode that he's a slow planner. He likes to research and plan things out. He needs time to think. Given more planning time he could've done something much better, but with such a short time he did the best that he could.
As for the next project-- the cement countertops, that was not Jason's fault. He was clearly working really hard. They made it seem like Andrew wasn't doing much though. They showed him on the phone and then being flirted with by "Ann and Lauren" (or was it "Laura".. couldn't tell). He only seemed to have completed one project while Jason was busy working on other things. The measurements for the frame for the counter had to be very specific. Cement can only dry so fast... I think the main problem with the counters was that 2 days (or rather less than one day since the frames were not ready to be poured into until 5 o'clock) was not enough time for the cement to set properly so it cracked. Alot of time was spent trying to patch it. Despite the fact that the counter was not finished when the homeowner returned, Jason did stay and finish the counter afterwards. I like Nadia but I personally think the cement countertop was a mistake given the timeframe. Especially since it was something that Jason had never done before. Evan was shown to be working pretty well as he got all of his frames done and then got to work on the beadboard.
It's not that the crew is lazy or anything. Chayse Dacoda mentioned that the producers started making them leave earlier on day 1 to give them less time to complete projects (because they felt it was more challenging). I think it is a mistake for the producers to do that but they probably feel that the rush at the end is good for drama or something.
Personally I would rather see them finish early with a happy homeowner and get to goof off instead of the last minute panic in which people start to get upset and the homeowner is disappointed.
