What do u guys think: Trading Spaces or While you were out? Personally I perfer Trading Spaces..i don't noe why, maybe cuz this show has better designers and a better host and the fact that two rooms are being decorated instead of one. Anyone agree??
Even though I love both shows, I tend to lean a little more towards "While You Were Out," simply because Paige is too perky sometimes, the show is a little too predictable, and the whole idea isn't nearly as fun. Besides, "Trading Spaces" is partially scripted; I've read interviews with the designers (who, for the most part, I prefer to "While You Were Out"'s designers, with the exception of John Bruce) and they always say the camera crew makes them go back and redo certain things. "Trading Spaces" has excess baggage in terms of designers; they should eliminate Hildi and Edward; on the rare occasion, I do like their work, but no one seems to like them.
"While You Were Out" is far less predictable, and Teresa was a great host--funny, smart, and able.
Oh, well, they're both great, and I enjoy them both immensely because I'll be studying interior design; in fact, because I have so very little free time, the only TV I watch on a regular basis is "WYWO" or "TS."
I'm leaning towards Trading Spaces on this one. Mainly because it's two rooms, and they constantly switch back and forth between them throughout the show. Meanwhile, the only thing in While You Were Out that switches is what the "victim" is doing on his or her "away from home" The thing I find enjoyable with While You Were Out is the questions for the people to win stuff...and Andrew (I have this thing for accents..ha!) All in all, I think Trading Spaces is better, now mostly because the atmospheric change with the new designers on TS hasn't been entirely noticeable as it is with the new host and the new carpenters and such on WYWO. The only thing that threw me for a loop was the new designers coming into the mix when they're both QUITE SIMILAR to Genevieve (can't spell) and Doug (Edward and that African-American woman...I can never remember her name for the life of me) anyway, yes..I'm babbling now...teehee..
Definitely Trading Spaces. I really do not like While You Were Out at all. It's very upsetting to me because I was really excited for another Trading Spaces-esque show. But, I was certainly disappointed.

*I am free of all prejudice, I hate everyone equally* :) I don't especially like either show, but Trading Spaces gets my vote. I think the reason is that the homeowners get to participate, instead of watching a bunch of carpenters and designers argue without too much input from the homeowner.

In WYWO, the homeowners get to participate too. Yes, I agree with you that sometimes they have many carpenters, but don't they have other carpenters on TS that are not shown? And if the homeowners don't give their opinion, they would probably end up with something that they don't like. (Which is the case on TS, at least when I would watch it.)
My vote is for While You Were Out. IMHO, they do better rooms. They actually listen to what the homeowners want, instead of on TS where they go and do things against their wishes. WYWO is also something that just one person can do, you don't have to have a family close to you that is willing to give up a room so TS can come in a decorate it. Sometimes (actually most of the time) the people who are on WYWO decorates the room for the person who is away because that person might not have enough time, and they just can't do it themselves.
I was highly considering applying for the show before they didn't do outside spaces anymore. I would have done it for either of my parents (probably for my mom), because I don't feel that I do enough around the house, and that would have be a way to repay her for everything that I should have done, but didn't. That is how much I trust the designers on WYWO. On TS, no way, I would never apply for that, my mom says that she would never let them in our house, and I don't think that any of our neighbors would go out it either.

Okay, I'm being completely honest in saying this...but I'm not good with decisions. Let me explain....
Trading Spaces was first and once they got rid of Alex *that god awful no personality host*, and Dez (god bless the fact that she won't be doing any more rooms since the most memorable of hers consisted of a room with plaster made hands on the mantle place) and replaced them both with Paige *she has so much energy and personality* and added new designers like Kia (i will admit i was hesistant at first, but i like her designs), the show has been going strong. Now mind you I was angered like many fans of the show when Carter came onto the scene and we started to see less and less of Ty..but the show has the staying power *enough to spawn a spin off (ts: family)*, and the designers have great ideas, and gel well with Paige making it just that much more enjoyable.
however...
While You Were Out, brought a different type of decorating to the scene. They started out with the host Anna who was basically the blonde equivalent of Alex *i swear i saw Anna on a commercial sitting on a bus*, replaced her with the ever serious, stick up her *bleep* Teresa, and then eventually came to the comedic carpenter/host Evan. The show right now to me has never been stronger right now. Andrew and Leslie are beyond talented, and then of course there are the designers.. now I may be flying solo on this remark but I'm at odds as to which show is better *not only because this show has Evan (god bless the guy for his smile)*, but also for John Bruce..now granted I can hear the complaints now..seeing as how he's god knows how old, and alittle weird at times, but weirdness works for me. And often times I'll watch it to see if he's the designer.
Of course....
There are things, or should I saw people about both shows that terribly annoy me... on Trading Spaces...it's a tie between Hildi and Edward...Hildi - hay, wrapping paper, flowers, feathers, CARDBOARD..enough said...Edward..I mean the guy's hair looks like it's plastered to his head for godsake...on While You Were Out..it's Chase...there's just something about her that I dont' like...actually it's more of a CAN'T STAND type of thing...
Now that i've explained my point..make up your own mind.. both shows are great and I think that TLC is better because of both of them.
While You Were Out NO CONTEST. I actually wouldn't mind living in the rooms that are remade in WYWO...but the rooms in TS...WHOA...NO WAY! Sometimes they're just UGLY!!! Sometimes the owners would cry and I'd want to cry with them cuz it's so horrible!!! I remember one where they used liquor labels for wallpaper....NOT a good idea! The only thing that's good about TS is Ty...hahahahha!! While You Were Out is so much more fun cuz the person doesn't know about it. And there are quizzes for them to win stuff. Even the host...Paige doesn't seem to do anything! I dunno.....I just like While You Were Out better.
WHILE YOU WERE OUT... Trading spaces is so boring I tried watching an episode and I feel asleep, another time I tried watching it and I was so bored I ended up changing the channel.
I also prefer WYWO, because is much funnier and the result most all the time is awsome. Also they work as a great team, I love them. For me TS is way too boring and the 80% of the results are just awful. I think in WYWO they make magic and the way they interact with each other is brilliant, they have carisma and they are funny and talented, just what you need for a great show to be succesful.
you really have to consider how old this thread is and how different WYWO was back then also. personally i think it's no contest for WYWO over TS, but i really can't watch any pre-evan farmer episodes either, evan brings in so much flavor to the show with his animated attitude. and I'll also agree that several times i'll see a TS room and think that it's just awful and i almost never think of that from any of the WYWO rooms.

I used to like TS more than WYWO, but there are designers on TS that I just can't stand and would not want anywhere near my house if I were to ever sign up for the show. Hildi has got to go, Doug is another one I don't care for most of the time. I have to admit, I like the Ventian Plaster thing of his, but that's about it. Some of my favorites aren't even on anymore, Vern was great, why he isn't on anymore is beyond me. I didn't think I'd like the format change when Paige left (because for some odd reason, I actually liked her, where as my sister didn't) but I think it's better because there are 2 carpenters and they're not limited by proximity anymore. They can actually chose family or friends that are a few blocks away to next door. Plus there's no stress on the carpenters in trying to get 2 rooms/houses done, they can spend more quality time on 1.
I don't like how they designers paint over antique/good furniture, ESPECIALLY pianos. I'm sorry but the (wish I'd taken lessons) piano player in me dies whenever I see someone paint a piano. You don't do that to an instrument like that. That, to me, just ruins it. I too don't like how the desingers (well at least Hildi, Doug, Kia, at times, and a couple others) don't listen to the homeowners. At least there are some designers on there that actually do take into consideration what the homeowners say and don't go for the shock value.
BUT WYWO was ok when it first started. Like many others, I couldn't stand Teresa, I thought she was useless. It seemed like she spent more time standing around talking than doing anything, I think Paige has done more/was willing to do more. Evan, on the other hand, can actually do carpentry work because that's what he is. He's not afraid to do what it takes to get the job done. Teresa was too girly for such things. I think having a host that can move into carpentry world as well as Andrew and the others is perfect for this show.
My mom's complaint is that they're constantly goofing off and then waiting until the last minute to get things done, resulting in them rushing. I have to say that's somewhat annoying. But having done stage work at my church, I know what it's like to be doing this kind of work for hours on end with no break. Sometimes you just have to get goofy and screw around to give yourself a break.
As for my list of who they should have kept and gotten rid of, Steven St. Ong had to have been my favorite, I wish he was still around, he did great stuff. Chase I don't like for some reason. I think it has to be her personality. Yes she does good work, but there's something about her that I don't like.
My mom loves Lesly, she keeps raving about what great work (sewing) she does whenever she's on.
What I like about TS is that they go back to the homeowners for a follow-up. I've always wondered if people kept the rooms the way they found them. Obviously the ones that hated the rooms didn't, but there were plenty where you couldn't help but wonder what people thought after having some time to live with it.
WYWO, feels like it's lost something in recent episodes. I don't know if it's that they're constantly using Chase (at least it seems like the only designer I ever see anymore is Chase) or what. But lately I've felt bored watching it. It could just be me and not the show, I've had a lot going on between changing jobs and just kind of being in a transitional phase as a result.
I don't think it is just you on the show having lost something. The show is now over (well, the last episode has not aired yet-- it is supposed to air July 22nd). A lot of changes happened in the last season. There were shakeups in the powers that be at TLC and they decided to go in a new direction. This included tampering with the format. Getting rid of quizzes, changing budget, and making homeowners refilm things. Making things up and filming non-existent conflicts for drama..
I heard a rumor that Andrew was feeling burned out and was a jerk to some of the homeowners in some of his last few episodes.
Evan bought a house and got married. Then his garage caught on fire around Thanksgiving. I heard a rumor that he bought a new car and it was destroyed in the fire. I don't know if he's had time to repair the damage yet.
I didn't like Chayse at first. She was very impractical and freaked out a lot. Then she started to calm down a bit. She and Andrew didn't mesh well in a work situation. (Andrew apparently said that he and Chayse are good friends but that they couldn't work together). Jason really liked Chayse. In fact, she was his favorite designer to work with. I really didn't grow to like Chayse until I got to talk to her in an online chat. She was very sweet and funny.
