For a fight/action movie almost everything mattered....

There really weren't any throwaway scenes. Even ones that first appeared throw away. The beginning mirrored the ending. Earlier lines like "being 3/4 moves ahead", Jmaes talking about not eating or drinking, the introduction of the PKLR and the pitbulls. Almost everything in the movie foreshadowed or alluded to something later. There were also things done with w/o dialogue at all. The transformation of Pinball's car, for one.

Yep. It's a real shame that more action movies can't be done this way. It is truly well written. Simple, servicable, it's not Shakespeare, but also, you are completely correct, every scene served a purpose and tied together with something else.

Over the past years this has become a bit of a cult classic.
