You know what's kind of funny? It has been stated on Wikipedia that Masamune Shirow (creator of Ghost in the Shell manga) admitted that Batou was visually based on Steven Seagal.
Other than that; yeah, Batou pretty much rocks. He was a lot more awesome in Innocence, though. But that's because I prefer movies to S.A.C. He is a lot more complex fictional character and person than Steven Seagal could ever be, though.
Huh, signature? What's going on with that signature? This thing broken...?
Bato is my favourite character, too (with the possible exception of Aramaki)
Although, personally, he reminded me a lot of George C. Scott, especially in GitS2
I think that has a lot to do with the set-up of the movie (minor character from an earlier movie investigating a somewhat supernatural (in this case, science-fiction) series of bizarre homicides. Reminded me a lot of Scott in The Exorcist III. The whole big guy with white-hair aspect is also a part of that similarity, although I agree that physically the resemblance is much closer to Steven Seagal.
Bato's also my favourite character, and my favourite scene is the second to last one in season 1 where he takes out an armed squad and a mecha. Not bad going.
When darkness overcomes the heart, Lil' Slugger appears...
bato is the man. if they ever made a live action film the actor would probably ruin the role, though you never know, but i say keep it anime!

does any1 remember the first episode of the 2nd gig when batou has to take down the armor plated terrorist and he runs out of ammo and he Tackles his ass, classic
batou is the shiz but i love me some togusa
The following sentence is true. The preceding sentence is false.
It wasn't that he ran out of ammo, his automatic jammed. I liked that it happened that way simply because that's the very reason Togusa uses the revolver instead of an automatic.
It was pretty awesome that Batou tackled the guy THROUGH A WALL and then notices the cops were right there and runs away like nothing happened.
They both make a great team. I love episodes the best when it's Bato and Togusa. Though their chemistry isn't too good in the second movie.
shareBatou and Togusa are probably my favorite characters. In the Player OP where the two were beside a car is sooo cool.

If a live action version is made, then I vote for Ron Perlman http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000579/ to play Bato!
I think he would really get into the spirit of the character!
He's a little short to play Batou (unless the rest of the cast is Japanese) but I think Mickey ROurke would do a good job.

"because that's the very reason Togusa uses the revolver instead of an automatic. "
That reminds me of the episode where Togusa is being raked over the coals at the trial of the guy whose limbs he shoots. At no point does he bother to specifically point out the legitimate reasons for his choice of weapon.
Oh, and besides not jamming, it's obvious Togusa is one hell of a good shot...and the gun he uses is made for competitive shooting. He can't fire as many, but he doesn't need as many.
