2nd Gig vs. 1st

How different are they? Is one better than the other? Will I have to watch the 1st gig to understand the 2nd?

I know these are odd questions, but I started watching the 1st gig and I thought the show was alright. It wasn't amazing, but it was decent. As the series went on I expected it to get better, but it got worse and just became hit-or-miss, with the hits not even being great. I probably watched 8 or 9 episodes. So I just lost interest in the series and stopped watching, but recently I caught the 2nd episode of the 2nd gig and I was blown away. This was the episode that was shown through the point-of-view of the disturbed pilot. So anyway, share your opinions :).

I think you gave up on the 1st gig too soon there are some great episodes later on. The episode of the 2nd Gig that you saw is generally considered to be a weaker one I believe.

I liked the two series equally, they are both great although I think the animation looks a bit better in the second and the major wears a more sensible costume

I'm only going to say this once: stay out of Camberwick Green - Sam Tyler

wow, it's considered the worst? Maybe this show just isn't right for me. The thing that put me off from the other episodes, was the pacing. I hated how they'd be investigating for like the first 3/4's of each episode. I didn't find the plots very thought-provoking either. I liked the Laughing Man episodes(only saw the first ones) and the one episode about the genius controlling the giant robot, but the other episodes bored me way too much.

In that case I'd pick out the Laughing Man episodes in the first gig and the Individual Eleven episodes in the 2nd gig. If you haven't bought the series you can get the relevant episodes separately. The Ghost In The Shell - SAC Trilogy Box Set contains those two story-lines edited into films along with Solid State Society. I haven't seen these edited versions so can't comment on how good they are compared to the series.
