I was wondering, is there any anime serie, similar (sci-fi, action) to this?

Trigun, Cowboy Bepop and Wolf's Rain would probably be the best, or at least most accessible examples.

Also, Neon Genesis Evangelion although, be warned, it does get seriously trippy by the end.

Battle Angel Anita is a 2 part movie, somewhat similar. Read the manga tho, top-notch
Ergo Proxy has the same feel, lots of cool ideas about robots, etc
Appleseed movies are similar as well.

while the series suggested above are VERY good (dunno about neon, gave me a headache...after another headache...), only Trigun is somewhat similar, the rest are quite diferent.

unfortunately (:P) GIST is somewhat unique in combining the cyberpunk, police work, warefare, robotics and philosophy so nicely.

Kinda seems random to recommend Evangelion, just seem like its in a whole different ballpark compared to GITS in terms of plot/setting and meaning.

If you're looking more for a cyberpunk type anime, there's Bubblegum Crisis, Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, Silent Mobius, Appleseed, and any of the Patlabor movies.

You could also try the Ghost of the Shell manga(original). It was recently reprinted by some company called Kodansha(spelling?) USA, I believe. So it should be available at bookstores like Borders(I should know, because I got mine there). Even more similar to GITS than any other anime or manga is Eden, It's an Endless World. Incredibly similar in terms of the philosophy, prostethic bodies, technology, etc. There's no Eden anime though, just the manga as far as I know.
