I disagree about the stand-alone episodes not doing the series justice. It's not even really possible to view the series as a whole without them (they are one half of the stand-alone / complex premise, after all). Think of them as necessary, bit-sized explorations of more simple ideas between the main course that is the Laughing Man arc, which can be pretty hard to digest at some points.
Perhaps their biggest value lies in fleshing out each of the characters, particularly some of the more peripheral ones. Even if you don't particularly like certain ones, they're only short, and won't detract from your overall enjoyment.
