worst film ever!!!

i am a huge movie fan and also a huge angelina jolie fan but i have to say when i went to the cinema to watch this it was that bad i had to leave half an hour or so into the movie as it was that bad! i just cant believe how terrible it was, i tried to keep an open mind about the way it is filmed but for me it just didnt work.

no doubt i will have a lot of people moaning at me about my opinion but just so you know thats all it is.. my opinion! (and my boyfriends lol)

It is so hard to try and understand what you are saying, try reading over what you wrote before posting it!

I was looking up Jude Law and saw this listed in his acting credits. I know I saw this film but remember absoluting nothing about it. At least you got a nice nap out of it!

reply

Sounds like he went into the theaterwanting to like it, But since the movie is so horrible he couldn't sit through it and left 30 minutes into it.
Can't really say i blame him. Cause it really does suck

reply

I don't care if you liked the film or hated it. But to state this is the worst film ever, proves to me your overwhelming ignorance.

reply

Well yeah, I guess it just means it's the worst film that person has ever seen. It's all a matter of opinion anyway, and opinions aren't worth much if you can't back them up with some kind of argument.

Did I not love him, Cooch? MY OWN FLESH I DIDN'T LOVE BETTER!!! But he had to say 'Nooooooooo'

reply

This movie was very good. I just bought myself a copy from Wal-Mart for $5.00 yesterday. I loved how the director made the film. The time he took to bring it all together. His first version he made on his home computer, and then some years later using real actors and the whole nine yards. The behind the scenes was even better.

Threads with this title pop up on pretty much every single IMDb board...apparently every movie is the worst movie ever made. This claim is usually made by someone who can't spell and who puts "lol" in their message somwhere for ABSOLUTELY NO REASON.

"My boyfriend hates this movie too- HA HA HA HA OH MY GOD THAT'S SOOO FUNNY I THINK I'M GONNA JUST DIIIEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!"

I know this is an old thread, but I just came across it and LOVED this last post. So true. So accurate. So perfectly appropriate.

The fact you've never heard of or can't recognize "hyperbole" makes me think maybe you're the ignorant one.

reply

Um, Angelina Jolie is the only thing in the movie that could make it bad.

Based on old action/adventure serials from the 30's and 40's... SKY CAPTAIN is far better than ANY of the source material it comes from... (and I've seen and LOVE the old serials)!

People who "hated" SKY CAPTAIN are certainly entitled to their opinions... but they are usually the same people who "hated" 1998's GODZILLA because all the previous GODZILLA movies were somehow "better"... (They weren't!)

As far as the old stuff is concerned...What's to recommend over the NEW stuff?

The horrible looping?
Bad editing?
Amaturish costumes?
Laughable dialogue?

NONSENSE!

For some reason people get all wrapped up in the nostalgia of the old material and actually convince themselves that this "new stuff", is somehow worse and inferior to the original(s)...

Ever watch the old PHANTOM or FLASH GORDON serials in their entirety? How about the BATMAN or SUPERMAN or ROCKETMEN serials? Sure they're entertaining in a quaint, innocent, - - "Hey it's 1935" - - sort of way, but don't tell me that ANY of them are in any way better than SKY CAPTAIN was.

SKY CAPTAIN wasn't the greatest movie... but the WORST FILM EVER?

C'mon!
It's just entertainment.

reply

I just watched this film again and loved it.

The one thing I hate about it- Gwyneth Paltrow. HORRIBLE. If everything else- the homage-laden storyline, the groundbreaking special effects, and the other performances- weren't so good, this film would be a wash because of her.

She didn't even phone her performance in. She sent it by telegraph. Ugh.

Jude Law's part probably could have been better cast, too, but I still think he did a good job. Ribisi played up the "50s sci-fi sidekick" part really well.

reply

Gwyneth Paltrow looks like she's 40+ in this one, not the 32 she actually was. Performance-wise, meh. She was ok. For some reason, I could see Marisa Tomei as Polly. She woulda rocked...

I agree, Giovanni Ribisi was great as the sidekick.

reply

You completely lost me when you said that the '98 Godzilla was somehow better than all the old movies. What a waste of celluloid.

reply

It really depresses me that there are people debating that this is in anyway a good film, fair enough may not be the worst film ever as the original poster said but its certainly clipping at the heels of those films. For a start as has already been said Gwyneth paltrow is awfull, i would of liked to of been in the film just to give her a good slap, she seems to be under the impression she's in someway attractive and she just has to keep saying 'hello joe' every two minutes in a sultry way and men will swoon, i dispair. Jude law is pretty much a wet lettuce and i find the idea of him being a hero incredibly hard to believe. Michael gambon was also suprisingly wooden and looked like he was smirking the entire time he was on screen, that really didnt do him any favours. Also the whole thing of Polly only having two shots in her camera really wore thin very very quickly, just take some pictures and shut up! The major nail in this films coffin would have to be minature elephants in glass jars, i thaught someone had spiked my coke when i saw that, utter drivel. Id like to end by saying i had majorly high hopes for this film, it was such a cool premise and i have gone back to it about 3 times wanting to give it a second chance, thinking it couldnt of been that bad but it really is that bad. The only redeeming feature is the beauty of Angelina jolie but shes only in it for 30 seconds, i suspect so they could shove her on the poster to draw you into this rubbish.

reply

"i am a huge angelina jolie fan"

and with those words u lost all credibility.

I thought Jude Law was miscast. He looked too young and short to be a hero in this sort of film, it needed a Harrison Ford type of hero IMHO.

Oh, come on, I LOVED Josie and the Pussycats. It's a cute bit of fluff, pure entertainment without agenda. Kinda like Sky Captain is. I liked both movies so much, I bought them on DVD, and not at Wally World, either.

"What are the other candidates besides Ishtar and Bulworth, and this utter peice of *beep*"

These for starters:

http://www.imdb.com/chart/bottom

Granted, the only ones I've seen on the list are Lawnmower Man 2, Battlefield: Earth, Howling II, and Bolero. They are utterly terrible and sometimes I find it hard to believe I managed to watch them from beginning to end.

Sky Captain is hardly the best movie ever, but it's far from the worst.

reply

Hmmm well let's see... I've seen "Superbabies 2", yeah I used to teach kids and somehow they snuck that one in on me when I was substituting or something. "Manos the Hands of Fate" is actually very funny if you watch it with MST-3000 riffing on it. But yeah a very bad movie. "Jail Bait" well that was one of Ed Wood's best movies! Steve Reeves was in that one. "I Accuse My Parents" is hilarious, you don't even need anyone's commentary on that one. "Astro-Zombies" are pretty cool and gory, and Tura Satana's in it so it's not all bad.

Oh wait a minute, I'm just looking down this list for ones I've seen... yes I have seen "Mission to Moscow." There was a time in my life when I literally would watch anything with Christopher Lee in it. Very bad movie, definitely worse than Sky Captain.

"Jaws: The Revenge" wow I saw that one in the theater. Really awful. Poltergeist III should be on here too.

Anyway, Sky Captain will never be on a list like that because it's a cool movie. It's very goofy but I think most people (ahem) can see that it's all in good fun.

Sky Captain is a movie for fans of old sci-fi. I think Sky Captain is the movie that Orson Welles would have loved to put together if he had the technology. If you like old action-noir films or if you are a fan of movies like The Hudsucker Proxy, you'll probably get into this no problem.

Listen, the movie is hit or miss. Some people (many people) won't get it. Which is fine! Movies, after all, are entirely user specific. My father's favorite movie is Stargate, a movie I didn't care for, but it doesn't make it any less the greatest film ever to him. I hate that people get defensive when a person calls a movie they love 'boring.' Different people have different attention spans and have interests in different things. It's not a bad thing. Liking or disliking a movie just because your friends or 'significant other' dislikes it is a shame, but that's a flaw with the person, not the culluloid.

The fact is, though, that Sky Captain cannot possibly be the worst film ever. That would take out of account several Land Before Time movies, Disney Sequels, X-Men 3, and Waterworld.

-Matt

P.S. For the record, I really love this movie.

I would not say the worst movie (there are distinctions between movies and films; though this started out as a film it turned into a movie) but I was very disappointed with it. I wish they would have kept the Noir feel that they intended (and before anyone says it this was not Noir) but they let it drop into Hollywood drivel with brainless plot, bad sequencing and horrible dialogue.

Bottomline:

big disappointment!!!!!!!!!!!

reply

Johanson I think you are mistaken -- even granting that you have said the film as it stands is not "Noir", I've never seen any kind of documentation that the film was ever conceived as a film noir. If you watch the original one reel film "The World of Tomorrow" that the Conran Brothers did on their own PC, it's clearly a direct homage of serials and has nothing at all in common with film noir. It's true that they did want to shoot the film in black and white but that's hardly the same as film noir. It was always conceived as a serial homage, which is to say it was always supposed to have a "brainless plot, bad sequencing and horrible dialog" because that's pretty much what serials are.

The OP left the film after half an hour so has no idea what the film is all about or what happens..plus I'm guessing (by the sentence structuring and poor grammar and punctuation) that she is also quite young..at least under 16.
Ergo:- she has an extremely limited experience of films and is in no posistion to state that SCatWoT is the worst film ever.

Every film on the IMdb has some arrogant w*anker stating it's the worst film ever because 'It's crap'. Now there's a convincing argument! It's rubbish coz you say it is, apparently. Using that logic i can comeback with 'it's brilliant..because I say it is!'

It's a pointless argument.Anyone who walks out of a film 30 mins in is in no position to make any comment what so ever except "I have the attention span of a goldfish"..which we can all agree is true.

reply

mrzeebub, never ever ever dare to compare this film to Rocketeer ever again, or I shall get very angry. They are not in the same ballpark.

reply

Of course this isn't Noir. It's an attempt to pull off a 30's/40's serial in the tradition of Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers/Tom Corbett Space Cadet. This is a full length version of the stuff I'd see on the Saturday afternoon matinees in the mid 50's on tv, only in color. Love it, it brings back memories...

I agreed, it did show great imaginations...and i love the characters
