One of the most beautiful movies to watch...

I actually think this should have got the oscar for cinematography that year.
I can't think of that many movies that are this beautifully shot, Hero was amazing aswell. Atonement was good too, especially that scene where McAvoy walks on the beach with the ferris wheel in the background .
Well there are some of them but this is definitely one of my top ten.

I have to agree.

If you enjoyed A very Long Engagement's cinematography, you should also try watching Delicatessen or The City of Lost Children also directed by Jeunet.
Also would be a good idea to watch Y tú mamá también, Great Expectations or A Little Princes directed by Alfonso Cuarón with Emmanuel Lubezki (Children of Men) as the DP who also worked with Terrence Malick in one of the movies most beautifully shot: The New World.
Kieslowski's Thre Colors Trilogy is stunningly beautiful.
Carlos Reygadas' Silent Light is another recent movie with a breathtaking cinematography. Or what about Guillermo del Toro's works? all of them are really beautifully shot and contains an incredible imagery that matches the films by Jeunet.
Besides you have Yang Zhimou's The Road Home, Raise the Red Lantern, etc... and of course The Last Emperor directed by Bertolucci or The Umbrellas of Cherbourg directed by Jacques Demy, etc.

There are too many to mention, but Jeunet's films are among the most gorgeous, visually speaking. That's for sure.

I will have to watch more of Jeunets work, I saw Amelie a few days ago and it also has some very beautiful cinematography. I will watch The City of Lost Children next i think.
I have seen El Labyrinto Del Fauno and The Devils Backbone by Del toro before and those movies has some nice cinematography as well. I've seen many of the movies you mention Kinematico and i agree with you they are all top class.

Last movies seen :
Amelie from Montmartre 9/10
Quantum of Solace 6/10

I loved the cinematography also, and I also thought of Atonement when I was watching it. Beautiful.

If you like beutiful cinematography watch Ridley Scotts first film 'The Duellists'.

I think every scene in this movie was just picture perfect! So beautiful.

reply

Absolutely! Like his previous film 'Amelie', director John-Pierre Jeunet has filled this film with swooping camera shots, eye-popping cityscapes of Paris, and (unique to this film) beautiful views of the French countryside. Particularly effective is his use of colour - the dull greys and browns of the battlefield trenches contrast greatly with the warm golden/sepia haze that seems to hang over Mathilde's Britanny cottage.

Particularly beautiful shots include one of Mathilde gazing over the ocean from the top of a lighthouse at sunset; a sudden wind sweeping over a golden wheatfield, pressing the wheat to the ground in eerie waves; and a slow trailing shot following Mathilde as she wanders through a bustling outdoor Parisian market. John-Pierre Jeunet certainly knows how to please the eye!

As you are, I was. As I am, you will be.
