So, did Elodie's (Jodie Foster's) husband survive, and did she know the story behind Mathilde's search? I got a little confused with all the characters, many of whom looked alike to me. (The director acknowleded this in his commentary!)

I think the OP was not referring specifically to these two people. I had the same problem because so many people wore moustaches :)) and I can't remember French names that well.

I believe the point was that they were both wearing the same uniform, with the same unit number, and both had mustaches.
