Why is the Russian's cryptonym for Edward 'Mother'?

This is really the only thing in the whole movie I still dont understand....beleive it or not. haha

Mother was the crytonym for James Jesus Angleton (who the matt damon character is based on).

well, in Russian the word for "mother" is used in just about every curse and swear you can think of so maybe that has something to do with it.
