Does anyone have any ideas as to why Edward was referred to as 'mother' by the russian?

If I'm not mistaken, the expression "the mother of all..." is a Russian expression. Used like "X, the mother of all Y". Like, the Tsar Bomba, the mother of all bombs. It could be that the handler saw him as "the mother of all spies", or something similar, and the expression stuck.

Edward Wilson(Angleton) was the head of counter-espionage, detailed to protect the agents of the intellegence agency. His duty was to watch over agents and protect them as a Mother would her children. "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings" Luke 13:34
