Why Billy Crudup as Archie Cummings

Why an American actor to play an English agent? His accent sounded overdone and a bit forced. It's not as though there isn't a shortage of high-profile English actors around and Crudup is not really that big a name to help sell the movie to an American audience. And then, of course the English Eddie Redmayne plays Edward jr. I know that anglophone actors tend to 'cross borders' with regularity, but why can't Americans play Americans, English play English, etc.? This is not some anti American trolling, it's a serious question about the casting decisions of the film studios. Perhaps accent coaches need the work.
