Dropping bugs from planes?

During the public speech made in the open by the Gautemala President, Dr.Ibanez, we see planes overhead (organized by the CIA) dropping bugs to disrupt the meeting--what was the basis for this scene? Was there a situation where the CIA deployed this method during the early days of its initiation?

I thought the bugs were locusts meant to eat away the coffee crop?

reply

Yes, I'd also like to know the answer to this. It is very similar to an allegation made by the Communists during the Korean War. At the time (supposedly) independent journalists and scientists verified the claims that bugs were dropped from planes (at least to some extent). Nowadays this was derided as a "germ warfare hoax" and is not supported by most scholars. If, however, this was practised in Guatemala, the Korean allegation is more credible.

The bugs were supposed to damage Gautemala's main product, i.e. the crops, and thus destabilize the country's economy. No idea if this actually happened in real life.

Well, a different target but a similar delivery method.

The CIA has a long history of using crop duster planes to disperse pestilential or chemical attacks on crops. Thrips, locusts, and other pests have been employed.

Not only that but the CIA developed and employed chemical warfare (including mind control drugs) methods before any other intelligence agency caught up. Methods of torture used in the Middle East were taught to Iranian and other Mid East agents here in the USA.

This link shows a record of biological attacks on Cuban crops and livestock:
