Why did Modin behave that way?

Once Modin (John Sessions) is outed as a double agent, he pleads not to be sent home, for fear of torture. But why? He was spying for Ulysses/Russia. I'm obviously missing something fundamental here, what is it?

Because he had failed in his mission and the KGB could never be sure that he hadn't been turned, so he would either be killed, for safety, or have no career.

Yup.
He'd get the same treatment the real Modin got when he showed up..
By "same treatment" i ofcourse mean much worse.
