Angelina Jolie miscast

Just caught up with this again and was jolted by the mis-casting of Jolie as Margaret 'Clover' Russell, as I saw the character. In my opinion, Jolie is much too exotic looking to be the daughter of WASPS.

reply

Or perhaps just too hot for the role. As if she'd have to seduce men to find a good husband...

reply

Seduce? It was more than seducing... she practically jumped on his lap.

Edit to fix a typo...

If the idea is to stay alive, I'm driving.

reply

<Lap>
Yeah, kudos to Wilson at least for playing hard to get :)

reply

She was sent to him, to make him part of that group of people insuring his cooperation with the plans the movies lays out.

He was being set up more or less, to have no choice but the life he lived.

Changing from the "fun" and sorta outgoing persona on stage, to being a inward and mistrusting analyst.

She played a predatory, overly-sexed, hypocritically conflicted woman. Where's the miscast?

reply

I know what you mean, but I actually meant her appearance is too exotic to be a WASP, generally speaking. And this was all about Americans and 'others' in part.

reply

I agree, though a plastic surgeon gave her a nice WASPish nose somewhere along the line.

reply

True, but from that scene on, her character morphed into a weak, emotional soul. Her looks deceived that part of her character. I did like the movie with all its complexities.

reply

She’s woeful in most everything.

reply

I liked her in Changeling and she had the right 'look' for the period too. I read somewhere that Eastwood primarily cast her for that aspect. I am about to watch TGS again, and could be wrong at this point, but I seem to remember her parents in the film having blue eyes. So if that is right, beside the fact that she doesn't have the right 'look' for the WASP parents, I understand it is biologically impossible for two blue eyed people to produce a brown eyed child.

reply

She's not brown eyed her eyes are blue green.

reply

It is not impossible for blue eyed parents to have a brown eyed child, somewhat rare but not impossible.

brother, you are going down.

reply

I thought Angelina Jolie handled this role quite well and showed her acting versatility. As far as whether or not she could pass for a WASP, please, an argument based on ethnic stereotyping can always be made on some other message board.

reply

What other message board did you have in mind? Films are about reality, in fact sometimes we laud them for that aspect alone, and IMO appearance is as critical to a characterization as anything else. Which is why, without stating the bleeding obvious, film makers go to great lengths to have the actor's appearance match the part. I have already said she is suited to some roles and IMO this wasn't one of them.

reply

This has nothing to do with ethnic "stereotyping". The WASPs were English, maybe Scottish and Welsh, too. They would have all been members of an extended family. Jolie didn't look right at all, but I guess they needed a big name for the part. Amy Adams might have been a better fit for the role.

reply

Sorry for late response, but thanks for bringing some much needed balance to the discussion. I really didn't think she was such a big name at that point? You could well be right. Beautiful looking girl, but too exotic for the part, IMO.Amy Adams would have been a better fit.

reply

Wouldn't she be considered a wasp? Her dad is Jon Voight and her mom isn't exotic. Though I guess they could be catholic.
