Michael Gambon

Why was Michael Gambon's character MURDERED?

reply

Because he tied Matt Damon's shoe.

reply

Because it's the best way to get rid of old people.

reply

Was it because he would "out" (no pun intended) that British spy as being a double agent for the Soviets???

He was gay and was no longer being discreet about his liasons. They thought he was becoming a liability.

Agreed, to a point. I'm not sure the Gambon character was ever that discreet about his liaisons, but earlier, at Yale, he was a valuable double agent who apparently had penetrated the America First organization. Then Edward nailed him for plagiarism, outs him as an agent for American First (not realizing then that he was planted there by British Intelligence). I think by the time he landed in London he was no longer that much of an asset, so the tolerance for his indiscretions decreased drastically. Which kind of plays into his warnings to Edward to get out while he still could.

not because he ripped off the poem?

Hey, sprechen sie talk?

I think the ripping off of the poem, the plagiarism, was part of it. It's possible it was an intentional error to establish his character (you can never be sure with spies) but it indicated a sloppy personality. I think when he was performing valuable service for the Allies as a double agent they probably accepted it as a cost of doing business. As soon as he's put on the shelf those actions become unacceptable.

good point. wilson was very quick to pick it up!

I think it was just to add some drama and violence to the movie. I can't believe in real life the British secret service would kill one of their agents like that.

No, of course not. The thought would never even cross their minds. In real life they would politely thank him for his service and send him to live out his retirement in a house on a hill overlooking a little river, with pinecones all around.

Haha +cmap2!

That sounds like Tony Soprano's explanation to Janice as to where and how they buried Richie!

I agree with you, of course.
