When I first saw that, I felt sick. She was killed in probably one of the worst way possible, falling thounsands of feet to her death in a jungle, I could think of some other mean of taking her out, but the assassins grab her and toss her from a plane now that is definitely in the top most horrible deaths ever.
Don't worry, I saw Lord of the Rings. I'm not going to end this 17 times.
And extremely useful for the Russians. That way Edward could never find out if she really was pregnant. Just another way for Ulysses to twist the knife. An awful business, spying.
That's only in cheap Hollywood movies and sloppy newspaper articles. You cannot physically open a big jet door in high altitude even if you tried, as the doors are closed from the inside against the frame and the higher pressure inside presses the door against the frame. A sudden depressurisation in case of damage to the fuselage can cause some damage but not a crash. In such a case, the pilot would quickly descend to lower attitudes to allow passengers to breathe and to restore air pressure, but it is a controlled descent, not a drop, as many ignorant newspaper journalists write. A plane like the one in the movie doesn't fly in high altitudes, I'd guess, and so the air pressure difference would not prevent the door from being opened. There are several examples of airliners having suddenly lost air pressure and landed safely.
I agree small twin prop planes like the one in the film fly much lower than your boeing and airbus's. This is why these planes are used for parachute jumping
Ever seen someone parachute jump out of a plane? Opening the door changes the aerodynamics, but under most cases it's no big deal, the plane can still fly.
Edward caused her death so they could not hold her family connection over him to force him to cooperate. They could threaten not only his son's CIA career (thus also maybe his life), but also to harm or kill the daughter-in-law.
For this, he sacrificed any possible remaining love between him and his son for what he perceived as "National Security."
To him, I guess they were "just visitors."
I also inferred some racism there, esp. since she was pregnant. The Skull 'n' Bones "brothers" would probably look askance at that.
Who would think of killing a woman like that? What a sick mind...that poor son, afraid all his life, a father who loves his country more than his own son. I really thought this was a terrific movie, I can imagine Robert de Niro spending ten years on this project.
It's a great movie I agree. And you cannot love your country more than your son unless you are seriously derranged. And yet people send their children to wars with "pride and honour". So much about humanity, love and sacrifice amongst human race. We're apalling creatures.
granted yeah she was a spy, but if it was me I would have perhaps broken her neck, strangled her, maybe even shot her then toss her out, alive kicking and screaming was just F_cked up.
Don't worry, I saw Lord of the Rings. I'm not going to end this 17 times.
Well if I understood her role in the movie wasn't she basically responsible for at least a major part of the failure of the Bay of Pigs?
If so a lot of cubans felt that same kind of fear as they were left to be slaughtered by Castro's men.
I'm kinda with you though on the if it was me part. Unless you messed with my family I'd make it quick. I guess Damon's character felt they DID mess with his family and his country so maybe he wanted it to be brutal.
P.S. Love your sig. I thought my back was going to break in half during part 3 of LOTR. All I could think was please end I just want to go home.
I still am not clear on who ordered her to be tossed from the plane -- the Americans (as revenge for Bay of Pigs fiasco and to keep her away from Edward, Jr.) or the Soviets (to hurt Edward, Jr. and thus Edward). Thoughts?
I wonder what did they tell him when he asked how his girl died?
I mean, seriously...They all saw her getting on the plane...she never got to her destination and of course nothing happened to that plane...What did they tell him?She were on the plane and went for a smoke or what?
PS Nice movie...never expected De Niro to do such a great work as a director.
That was the most horrifying scene in the film. At first I thought they gave her a parachute -- but then I realized they tossed her wedding dress out after her. Even if she was a spy, it was brutal.
Easy enough as to why they didn't use other methods. Bullets cost money and might damage the plane if they missed her. Also, if anyone asked, it would be difficult to support the argument that she simply fell out of the plane if she had a bullet hole in her or a knife wound, or if there was blood on the inside of the plane. Belting her over the head with a length of pipe might be an option, but only to make her more tractable in getting her out of the plane. But then again, thumping her in the stomach and winding her would do just as well. Or just grabbing hold of her and slinging her out.
Just chucking her out is thus simple and brutally effective - why bother to go to more elaborate lengths? Apart from compassionate considerations, which obviously not going to be uppermost in the mind of someone about to kill another person, otherwise they would not be killing them. :-)
He never met the girl. After being desensitized by his job, he wouldn't care how she died, especially knowing she was an asset to Ulysses just like the girl with the hearing aid. All that mattered was that his son would never know the true story.
I think maybe the pregnancy was something that came up on the tape recording that Ulysses only played a small part of. Ulysses kept that from him so that if Damon's character had the girl killed, there would be that piece of news learned later from the son, to hurt Wilson because he refused the offer to work with the Russians.
He should have had his worthless as tits on a boar hog son tossed out of the freakin plane as well. Talk about dead weight and a serious liability to boot, according to this movie that doucher cost us the Bay of Pigs. Seriously though Ed Jr. had to be one of the most unsympathetic unlikeable characters I've seen in a film in some time.
I disagree with those of you that say it was a twisted way to kill someone. All that would happen is she would fall for about 30 seconds (the plane wasn't that high up), then splat and it's done with. It is such a painless and efficent way to die that throwing yourself off a tall building is one of the most popular methods of suicide for those who are serious about killing themselves.
Also, the post made eariler that said it was impossible to open the door of a moving plane is ridiculous. Sky-divers get the door of the plane open just fine. I realize they don't fly as high as commercial flights but neither was the plane that the girl was thrown from.
it is definitely possible to open a door while in flight, even jumbo jets can do that. They'll do that if there is a cabin fire and they need to vent the plane... (I saw that on Mayday) only works at low altitudes and only after the fire is out. But if they are up to high then the air pressure will suck people out. But the plane in the film was flying at a low altitude. Its not a nice way to kill someone... but not the worst method either... depending on what she lands on and how high up they were there is a chance that she might actually still be alive for a few hours after hitting the ground (people have actually survived such falls, but under rather unusual circumstances), so she might have a slow lingering death in the jungle. -------------------------- RIGOLETTO: I'm denied that common human right, to weep.
