I did not like how he "lied" about knowing John as if they were friends. If he was John why couldn't he say he knew him that they were friends...? Would have made more sense ...
What's with George getting all the "freebies" throughout the movie ...or we just to infer what a nice guy he is ???

The family was just getting back into living again. The mother and sister would have had a really hard time handling it. He led dad into it very gently over the course of the film.

One of the store keepers spells it out, saying something to the effect that he'd been helping and volunteering all this time, and this was their way of saying thank you.
