That lawyer was a complete prick towards Aileen.

Any person would be able to tell that there was something wrong with this pitiable creature in about a minute. That was so unnecessarily cruel on his part. I wonder if anything resembling the movie scenario took place in the real Aileen's life?

reply

I know, I couldn't stand that. What a hypocrite. He is supposed to be a PROFESSIONAL. She was acting more professional than him. Employers are supposed to thank you for your interest, and you for their time.

And his whole "I'm actually offended..." If he's offended by an unqualified job application he must have horrible self esteem.

reply

Maybe I'm a horrible person, but I LOVED the lawyer. As an attorney, he undoubtedly has spent years talking to hillbillies who either want to be acquitted of horrendous crimes, or want the real world to give them massive legal settlements because they got a paper cut at work, or an undercooked cheeseburger at McDonald's. So when he sees a 30-ish woman who has frittered her life away and now wants be a lawyer, he just snaps. Can anybody honestly disagree with any of the things he tells her?

reply

I don't think anybody disagrees with him but its one of those situations where the tactful thing to do is keep your opinions to yourself and politely decline the person.

reply

Fair enough, but the post-er before me who said that Aileen acted more professional than he did must have been watching a different movie.

reply

Just another word on this subject: the lawyer was obviously confronted by a delusional personality, as we all have at one time or other. I believe the lawyer would be doing a disservice to Aileen by being upbeat and thanking her for her application. Aileen may as well learn sooner rather than later that the life that she has chosen for herself up to that point would probably disqualify her for a white-collar job. To let her think that she has a shot at a job in the legal profession is not only condescending, it's downright cruel. I say, tell her the truth, and then hope she isn't armed.

reply

Hmmmm, yes he was obnoxious and cruel and I cant believe he was allowed to just come out with all that and be so brutal, but you cant deny everything he is saying is true.

"What, you don't like rice? Tell me Michael, how could a billion Chinese people be wrong?"

reply

From a factual sense, did Aileen choose a party life though? I mean she didn't really seem to have the nourishing upbringing that would birth a lawyer. She was kicked out of home and on the street hooking for money. Hardly a partying lifestyle if you ask me. She should have said something like "well I'm sorry while you were in College earning your degree I was prostituting myself just to eat and survive because my idiot mother threw me out because she picked her boyfriend who was molesting me over her own daughter".

Florenz Ziegfeld Jr. - "The glorifier of the American girl"

reply

James you make a great point, and the lawyer could have been just as clear about her lack of qualifications about the position without his tirade (I imagine Leslie's life was hell). As for Aileen's reaction, of course it was inappropriate, but all things considered he's lucky she didn't shoot him...

reply

Thank you. I mean she really didn't have much of a chance.

Typical reaction, from an 'unfeeling' lawyer. One is not elevated to high reverence or superior status, just because of a degree in bulls^!t.

Holey *beep* Truth!

reply

I didn't say I was a lawyer; the person who comes off as smug and self-righteous is (wait for it) YOU!!

reply

I never claimed you were. I quoted part of what you wrote and made a comment, about how I feel about most lawyers in general. I couldn't care less if you loved the lawyer character or not. Perhaps this makes you the smug and self-righteous one?

reply

You just use chat-rooms to pick arguments with people and insult them, don't you? What an unhappy individual you are. (Skip that comma after "comment". It's superfluous.)

reply

I think I am the one that has made you unhappy and your obsessive sociopathic tendencies, are getting the better of you. That is why you can't help responding to my posts. Pleased that I have made some sort of miserable impact in your deluded and self-important little life. You don't want others to argue with you and tell you what is 'real', because you can only think in terms of how things affect you and your own delusions and self-entitlements. The only thing that is superfluous, or in your case extraneous, is your life. Now go and get a grip on yourself, before you cave in even deeper, into that empty abyss of a soul you possess.

Wow, you seem to be more than usually full of muddy excrement today. Did you not have your morning constitutional dump? That sentence is beyond deciphering. It's the perfect illustration of the old phrase, and typical of you, "If you can't dazzle them with knowledge, baffle them with bull$h!t."

reply

_________
Ah, but it's not bull$h!t, if one has clarity. You appear to posses zilch. You can lead a horse to water; but you can't make it drink. Maybe you should take a sip, it might help cleanse all that dung that has compacted in your rotten and stagnant guts.

reply

You appear to posses zilch.

Is "posses" the plural of "posse"?

(sigh) You're hopeless. You can lead a whore to culture, but you can't make her think.

This is your whole issue Smug Simpleton, you can't think beyond your own deluded and self-important mindset and it has made you an outcast. It is all about attention seeking with you, as you were denied any genuine form of love or nurture and your folks could see what a horrid and vile creature they had been burdened with. Then again, they were\are probably just as pompous, foul and arrogant as you turned out to be, so your conditioning is not all that surprising.

reply

You quoted this part of his comment and nothing else. You knew what you were implying. I can't stand disingenuous people like you.

"Oh what me? I never said that!" *rollseyes*

reply

What I want to know is, how the hell did she even get an interview?

reply

She probably BS'd her way into the interview(assuming it ever happened, which I doubt). The lawyer had a point about other people working hard to get good jobs. Aileen drank day and night and sponged off people in between tricks. Aileen was lazy but grandiose, and felt entitled. The only consolation to people who thought she should have been given a chance is that she would not have lasted long there. She did not work well with others and she had a problem with authority, as well as an explosive temper, which I think was the point of the scene.
The lawyer was a prick but Aileen also acted like an AH.

My impression was that they were shorthanded and someone else usually did the interviewing.

Get me a bromide! And put some gin in it!

reply

Agreed, I got that feeling too. I also thought that both could've displayed better behavior than they did. But Aileen was pretty damn calm and nice before he went on his tirade. I thought that he could've made his point without being a dick about it, I couldn't blame her for getting upset but at the same time, she was naïve to think she could get the job without any qualifications or a resume.

"I am the ultimate badass, you do not wanna `*beep*` wit me!"- Hudson in Aliens.

reply

I know what you are saying koffee, but when I see Aileen in that scene it looks to me that she is straining to hold it together during the interview. There seems to be desperation just under the surface. Awesome job by Theron.

reply

I wondered that too. How does a person land an interview for an office job without a resume, let alone any relevant work experience?

reply

She probably got the interview by just walking into the law office and asking for one lol

reply

Nonsense. While all the things people said about her lack of qualifications are true, she was not showing any signs of entitlement that that prick lawyer attributed to her. She was simply being naive. He had no reason so behave like that, he could have easily let her down easy and saying she doesn't fit the role. Clearly he was so offended to have to even interview such a low life her that he just had to have a go at her.

reply

I think the whole section was to provide some comic relief as well as dash her illusions of going straight. It was abrupt and powerful, showing society had no place for someone like her. Not even as a factory worker. She was far too dysfunctional.

Getting the interview or the lawyer being brutally honest were just for effect.

In a way he saved her time and brought her back to reality.

reply

I think I've heard it a hundred times in job interviews. The people who say they're really good at working with people in the absence of anything else, usually aren't. I mean sociopaths are great when everyone's agreeing with them. But woe be it to the person who doesn't.

Going by what you're saying, she would have been a fantastic attorney!

reply

this thread is hilarious. in reality he would have humored her & when she left, her application would have been balled up & thrown in the trash. & he & the secretary would have had a good laugh.
