Time frame of the movie?

I know in reality, Aileen met Tyra around 1986 and was arrested in 1991, but I definitely didn't get the impression that the film was taking place over 5 years. The IMDb Q&A page says it takes place between November 1989 and January 1991 (first murder to arrest -- about 14 months) but to me the pacing seemed to indicate that the film took place over just a few weeks.

It was a small budget film. They probably spent most of their money on Theron's makeup, haha. In any case, with a larger budget they probably could have widened the scope to make the pacing more indicitive of the actual timeframe.
