When Tommy was first climbing through the duct work, they used a shot real similiar to that of the one from Die Hard 1. It had to have been deliberate.
I went through some of the other posts to make sure it hadn't been mentioned before but stopped once I read a spoiler. I was only halfway through the movie.

That just means they both watched Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (the 1960s series) when they were kids. Seemed like they were always having to crawl through the ductwork on that show. LOL
