Doesn't Make Sense

I,ve ordered the book because the reason for the cartel to get personally involved doesn't make any kind of logical sense. First whoever he talked to knew what DVD it was on. Second it wasn't like it was going anywhere while the hostage situation went on. The reason for the DVD needing to get handed over by such a deadline that all stops were pulled was never explained. It would seem if he's transferring to off shore accounts then the owners of those accounts should be able to check them at the banks. So needing the DVD so bad that they take such crazy risks just made no sense.

Interesting flick, but just a bit convoluted to make sense....Unless I missed something in the short explanation.

Oh! I doubt I'm the only one who wouldn't have minded if Willis daughter didn't make it.....What a nasty brat....

I made a post saying a similar thing. I didn't see this when I was last on. I enjoyed the movie, as a 90's style homage, but there was no need to involve a Police Chief and his family. The movie should have been over when he was at the diner. About his daughter, why was she so upset?

Spoilers for the book

I have just finished the book and i found it just as exciting as the movie. In answer to your question, the dad in the house is an accountant for the mob and in the book its described as two disks that have all the details of illegitimate buisness dealings from that branch of the mob. Basically, they have a man in that part of the country who can deal with it, get the disks out so when the police resolve the hostage situation, the cops dont get their hands on the disks hence the mob don't get in trouble.

They also kidnap the wife and daughter so they have leverage over the cop dad so he wont talk about whats on the disks. I haven't watched the movie in years but the mob also have their own pretend fbi agents to come in and have to be the first to enter the house.

When I get a computer again, and I'm not on my phone I look forward to reading this. It may be a while.

So I'm not sure this is accurate but this is how I understood what happened. The guy Mars was some how in on it and working for someone who rivaled the mob. He befriended the other kid 3 weeks before as they mentioned and convinced him to "steal their car" seemingly randomly, but he actually knew about the money in the house and the discs but didn't know where to find the discs so that is why he was so intent on burning it down, which he said multiple times. That is why the secret group rushed to lean on Bruce Willis because they knew someone was in there working against them but didn't know what they were dealing with yet.

I could be wayyyy off but that is what I thought on my first viewing. I was also a little confused about how things went down at the end but also still enjoyed the movie. If the plot was tied together a little more it could have been really fantastic.

I don't know if that's right, but nothing I can think of contradicts your theory. I just made a post saying it was confusing that they would drive so far from their hometown to be antagonistic. Where they come from is gang and mob controlled in real life. With government facilities all around, interesting....

imo, the boys weren't involved.. like Willis said, "you just picked the wrong house."

buuuuuut, if Mars WAS involved, the ending would make a bit more sense. i know he's socio/psychopathic, but suddenly he's skittering around the vents and doing the reverse-sit-up-out-of-the-ceiling thing and sniper-ing actual hitmen with assault rifles?? that was a bit TOO much suspension of disbelief for me.

I don't believe for a moment that Mars was working for a rival mob. But the mob who wanted the disc may have thought so, which is why they wanted to recover it before it got into the hands of their enemies, or of cops investigating the crime scene.

The mob's plan to coerce Talley into talking his way inside and getting the disc doesn't seem all that absurd. Where the movie went off the rails for me was with the fake FBI guys. I mean, you can't just turn up in a black van with FBI on the side and take over a hostage situation.

So it would all be solved if people did not keep evidence like that around that could be exploited by the police. But criminals are going to be stupid criminals in movies with bad writing.
