the final scene (spoiler alert!)

Alright, I suffered along watching this flick with miscasted wooden acting and so-so action sequences. What really bugged me was the final scene in the lab with the timed explosion with the bullet on the tanks. The tanks are used for cooling and filled with liquid Nitrogen. Nitrogen does not explode or ignite and a stream of it is even used in some procedures to keep things from exploding or igniting. Shoot a tank of it and you know what would happen? The nitrogen would come pouring out and that's about all.

Jennings said the tanks were filled with liquid hydrogen. Very different element.

it's all moot. a .45ACP copper-jacketed hollow point (even a hot Federal round) woulnd't pierce a compressed gas cylinder. those things are THICK, and strong enough to withstand the internal pressure (and thus, keep the H2 liquid)

Well that's one thing but why the hell did he choose the last tank. Tank number 6. He could have gone with 3 or 4 but 6 was obviously gonna take ages. It was a stupid plot dvice, almost as bad as having to choose the right wire to difuse a bomb in the last second.

I just finished watching this after taking a look at the original Phillip K. Dick story. I thought it was okay right up until they end. I could take some of the changes and it was interesting to see how they drew from the story earlier on but the climax just turned into a generic action movie and was nothing like the original work.

For one thing, in the short story, Jennings goes in alone. He has a female partner-in-crime but she doesn't actually go with him into the offices (not to mention she was a secretary there and turned out to be Rethrick's daughter); he just has her hold onto everything he finds so that it doesn't get picked up by the authorities. He also had no interest in destroying the machine (in the story, Rethrick wasn't particularly concerned with what happened to Jennings; the latter actually had to find a way back into the company because it was the only chance he had to avoid being caught by the secret police). He did have to do a fair bit of sneaking around and there were some tense moments but all he did was photograph the "time-scoop" (which in the short story was illegal technology) and then threatened to send those pictures into the authorities in order to convince Rethrick to let him become a partner in the company (we didn't have everything blowing up), in the movie Rethrick is turned into a generic bad guy going to great lengths to kill Jennings for some reason, and he gets killed at the end.

So, in short, in the story, Jennings sneaks into "the Plant", photographs the machine and steals the blueprints, and then blackmails Rethrick into letting him become a partner (as opposed to simply being a worker whose mind will be wiped when he's done). The secretary tries to outwit Jennings by hiding all the material he collected but he remains one step ahead when it turns out that the last item among the trinkets he was given was a ticket stub for a safety deposit box, with the secretary shocked when she pulls out her ticket only for a metal claw to come out of nowhere and take it (presumably past Jennings using the "time-scoop") He succeeds, and becomes a partner, with hints that he may eventually take over.

In the movie, on the other hand, Jennings decides the machine is bad and needs to be destroyed, so he breaks into the factory (which was in an isolated location in the original story) accompanied by his girlfriend, deciding to destroy the machine (but not before deciding to use it for some reason... even though he already explained why it's not good to know your future). Then Rethrick and his partners catch up and there's a big shoot-out which more or less results in everything blowing up and Rethrick gets shot and killed, and the whole thing about the authorities wanting Jennings is tied up with them spontaneously deciding they don't want him anymore and claiming he died in the explosion.

And when Jack Crow and Buffy Summers joined forces, Edward Cullen never knew what hit him.
