Why is Ben Affleck famous?

I netflixed this one for no real reason and although the movie was entertaining (if you overloook all the plot holes, Aaron Echkart, and other silliness) I couldn't stop asking myself how someone as nauseating as Ben Affleck ever reached the status that he did. He's not a good actor, not hanadsome, and he basically just makes you want to beat the piss out of him. Yeah he was Matt Damon's buddy and he was putting it in JLo's chunky backside for a while but that still doesn't expalain why he ever reached mega star status. Can someone please explain this to me?

Early in his career, Ben Affleck was a good, reliable supporting actor but a so-so leading man. I don't particularly care for him as an action star, really. He really came into his own when he started writing and directing films like The Town and Argo.

I actually give Ben Affleck a lot more respect than other indie directors that critics love. I don't hate Jim Jarmusch, Roger Waters, or Ang Lee. They all have all done movies that I've liked, and each has a signature style. However, I actually enjoy Ben Affleck's movies a lot more than any of those three. How can I call Ben Affleck overrated?

This movie was pretty good in my opinion. 7/10

I'd say being Matt Damon's buddy is a big part of it. Movies like Good Will Hunting have shown he can act, but I can't think of a movie he was in where he's the reason the movie was good, or it was better because of him. He just didn't hurt it, and did his job keeping pace (in Good Will Hunting). I'd say the other actors in the film are what collectively made the movie. Same with School Ties, or Dazed and Confused. He did ok as Batman in Batman vs Superman, however (was pleasantly surprised, although the plot was lacking, which is not his fault).

I know looks are subjective, but I think most would agree he's a good looking guy by most standards. Of course, that doesn't make him a good actor, but it does allow him to get roles (some leading) in forgettable films, such as Paycheck. I felt like Paycheck could've been a made for TV movie, and had too many plot holes to suspend disbelief. It's like they just threw it all together and insulted our intelligence. Don't get me wrong, I like mindless entertainment as much as the next person, but this felt too fake even for cheesy sci-fi. The plot holes/bad acting/poor cinematography kept getting in the way of checking my brain at the door and enjoying the film.

Well he's famous because you're wrong on one account: he's handsome by Hollywood standards. Personally I wouldn't care if he was downright beautiful since his "acting" makes me roll my eyes so much I couldn't enjoy his looks anyway even if I cared, but there are people, sorry, women, who find him hot.

No accounting for taste.

However, he can't act for crap. He's had moments as a director. Now he just needs to stop casting himself in his movies.

He does know how to milk the celebrity cow for sure. From the power dating to the fake careless attitude about celebrity, he's got the right angle.

Still, I hope he goes away soon. His 15 mn are waaaaay up. On the other hand, it's not as if he took up parts that talented actors would be good in, he's in crap after crap (Batman being the latest in a long series) so whatever

I swear it's cause he's the embodiment of that guy that we all went to high school with and it's just comforting, whether you loved or hated that guy. You're just used to having him around. That's my take on his enduring appeal.

It was because of two movies he featured prominently in during the late 90s: "Shakespeare in Love," and "Armageddon." During that time, he was at the top of his game, and was considered a smoking hot heartthrob. That was how he got so much attention. The problem is, his fame has gone down over the past 20-some years, and he hasn't really been taking care of himself, or his personal life very well, so there's a reason he isn't as popular as he used to be. That, and the trouble is, people who lived during the 90s and early 2000s still remember the young, handsome heartthrob when they see him nowadays, and forget that he's now a has-been. His fame has also been hurt a lot by him being unfaithful to his [now ex-]wife, Jennifer Garner, and starring in movies in recent years that were either bad, or extremely unforgettable.

I would also point out that "Paycheck" was not one of his most memorable movies, despite it being an okay, not great story.

Yeah he was Matt Damon's buddy and he was putting it in JLo's chunky backside for a while but that still doesn't explain why he ever reached mega star status.

Producer Terence Chang wrote in his book: "There was nothing wrong with him, but I always felt that he was not very involved. Maybe it was because his girlfriend at the time, Jennifer Lopez, was also filming in Canada and would come to visit the studio sometimes. The two of them often made love to each other in front of the staff, as if no one else was around. The heroine Uma Thurman is very dedicated, but I always felt that there was a little lack of chemistry when filming the emotional scenes between the two."
