Are we suppose to like these people?
I hated them all.
shareI'm not sure that we are supposed to like them. They are definitely flawed, but I do feel empathy for Joel. Mary as well. I don't know how you feel about the movie, I loved it, despite not liking the characters.
shareI hated it. Just watched it for the first time and glad that is behind me. The movie is just silliness.
shareThat's why its called spotless mind.
shareHave you never had a relationship that was doomed but you just couldn't give each other up?
I understand why you wouldn't like it, but I think it speaks a lot on relationship issues many of us have had.
It speaks about relationship issues in very authentic and realistic way. This is why I like the movie. I was in similar situation when I watched the movie in the first time (without the memory lost part of course LOL). I found myself identifying with the introvert personality of Joel and find Clem exciting but at the same time dangerous and irritating in the long run. I can understand Hownos original post, but I don't think the likability of the characters are the main reason many people give the movie high rating.
shareUh...you're never supposed to feel a certain way about any character. You just feel the way you do.
shareYou're not suppose to like, hate or admire them. They are who they are. The writer is suppose to write his characters in a manner that's necessary for the story he want to tell, and you react however you see fit.
shareI hate them all too, deeply. I didn't like the movie because of that, mostly.
It would have been a good movie with people I cared for.
Not only the main couple was awful, hatable and repulsive: even the side characters were awful, hatable and repulsive! What a feat!
It looked like the filmmaker are asperger affected who have no idea what likeable human beings are like.
That’s funny. It’s one of my favorite movies.
They’re flawed and realistic. She’s an insecure extrovert, and he’s an insecure introvert. They’re kinda cute together.
Bet you hated Sideways too.
Froto was absolutely hilarious in this. So creepy.
That's really what we're all like as humans, flawed and unlikeable at times. We're not always perfect. I can sort of see why as much as this film has it's fans that there are just as many who don't like it. It's one of those classic films that I have always found it hard to really love but I admire it. I find that a lot with Charlie Kaufman work's, besides Being John Malkovich that I find a lot of his written and directed works very hard to get into them but I admire it.
I think it's really directed well, Jim Carrey, Kate Winselt and even Kirsten Dunst have never been better. Soundtrack is great. I think it's more so I don't really like Joel and Clementine and for me in this type of film you got to like one of the main characters. I actually preferred the Stan (Mark Ruffalo) and Mary (Kirsten Dunst) stuff, as both of them were likeable.
People that aren't perfect, oh my god I hate them all so much.
