How the hell did Diane Keaton get an Oscar nom for this?

Just finished watching it for the first time. It's no different from her performance in, say, The First Wives Club. The movie itself is rather run-of-the-mill, and her performance was okay but not award-caliber. The endless crying scene is some of the worst on-screen crying I've ever seen.

Anyway, I see that she also got a SAG nod and won the Golden Globe for Musical/Comedy. Sorry but Jamie Lee Curtis should've won the GG for Freaky Friday (her character was at least demanding and she put an admirable effort into it), and if the Academy wanted to recognize a comic performance that year, it should've been Curtis. I remember there was a lot of talk about her at the time and some pundits were predicting her (and Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean) as possible surprise nominations.

Diane Keaton has been playing Annie Hall since the 1970's. Great character, but it had its place. In Annie Hall.

Hmm, Critical. I mean Critics.

Her performance was less than ok actually. I was surprised at how heavy handed she was. She didn't deserve that Oscar nomination but it's ok, neither did Curtis.

I actually thought Diane was brilliant in this, but maybe that's cos I've been exactly in that position. (Sobbing uncontrollably over a man), and I thought that scene was absolute genius. Funny and heartbreaking at the same time.

Did she seriously get a nomination? I agree with all the above comments. Run of the mill. Plays the same neurotic character in EVERY movie.

If Diane Keaton was horrible in this, then many actresses didn't deserve a nomination over the years, just because you don't like the character she played, doesn't mean she was horrible.

If you thought that was supposed to be serious you are mistaken. It was meant to be funny. I can't believe you did not know that.

I really didnt see anything special about her performance.

I thought she deserved the nomination. It's possible I'm biased because I could relate to what she went through 100% (except for the part of her character which is rich, famous, has a hot-ass doctor in love with her). Oh and I'm nowhere near her age but other than that, I related to her--even the crying bit.

Political correct matriarchy that we live in wouldn't have it any other way.

It's not about who is good, what needs to be shown, said or told, or who did a great job.

It's about what agenda does anyone's acting or job serve, it's irrelevant if it's GOOD acting or if that agenda is good or bad for humanity.

If you are politically correct and serve the matriarchal delusions, you are pretty much guaranteed a pat in the back from the system.
