Hedlund is great, but Tate Donovan still is the king
IFC's "Neal Cassady" starring Tate Donovan still is the definitive Neal/Dean. His hyperactive nature and manic grooving on life is embodied by Donovan. Hedlund is much more reserved and "cool" in the sense of a toned down Dean that seems more normal and average....like a former football star who's just found out about poetry and art and is just exuberant about it...but not "is he crazy?" and "burn, burn, burn." I liked Hedlund a lot, and yeah, you could say he is playing Dean and not Neal, but Dean in the book is this unstoppable force to be reckoned with and his gravitational pull that pulls those close to him, despite his amoral actions was a big question mark in the movie because of this absence.
