What is your favorite film about Jesus?

This is my all time favorite film. It is in my opinion the closest to the depiction of what took place during the day of the Lord Jesus' crucifixion.

What is your favorite film about Jesus?

reply

Each to their own... this is undoubtedly one of my least favourite films. I hated every second of it I guess it’s always a good thing that films exist which provoke such extreme reactions but I honestly wish I could take back the hours I spent enduring this film.

My favourite film about Jesus? Scorsese’s The Last Temptation of Christ, a bold and daring work, one of Scorsese’s finest movies imo.

When I was young, I really liked Max Von Sydow in The Greatest Story Ever Told. Granted, he was a blue-eyed Jesus but they were mesmerizing and his portrayal was of a charismatic and robust Savior.

The original Ben Hur.

I still haven't seen that one, even though I recently did an "epic film" tour, including Ben-Hur, Lawrence of Arabia, Gone With the Wind, Cleopatra and The Ten Commandments.

I'll have to catch The Greatest Story Ever Told soon.

I watched it again after many years during this past Christmas holiday, along with Ben-Hur.

"Granted, he was a blue-eyed Jesus..."

Many Jews are (and were) fair-skinned and blue-eyed. The insistence on a dark, swarthy, brown-eyed Jesus is a modern PC notion for which there is no evidence.

And "dark, swarthy," is redundancy.

I like this one, but it's far from an accurate depiction of a Roman crucifixion. Gibson often went for emulating classical art over historical accuracy. If anything, the crucifixion in The Last Temptation of Christ was more historically accurate. Hell, even the depictions of crucifixion on Xena: Warrior Princess were more accurate than it was in this movie....

I love this movie, and also really enjoy The Miracle Maker from 2000. Who woulda thunk a claymation movie could be so moving?

Another movie I enjoy (and I might be the only one) is 1993’s The Judas Project.

You probably are.

I watched The Miracle Maker too. It was great! Another great animated film was Jesus: He Lived Among Us.

There arent a whole lot of Jesus films so it's a tie between Passion and The Last Temptation. Both strive to tell the same story but come from totally different places. Mel's Passion is deeply personal film, owerwhelmed with visceral feeling. It surely is a fantastic looking film. Scorsese's Temptation is a bold intellectual character study almost, which requires lot more attention from the viewer. Also the score by Peter Gabriel is one of my favourites, it simply works wonders for the film.

Looking forward to Passion II: The Resurrection !

I view Last Temptation as more of a "What if?" scenario and Passion as a more straight dramatization of the story.

A Jesus film that I feel doesn't get nearly enough attention is Risen with Joseph Fiennes. It's an inspired-by-the-Bible (think Ben-Hur) tale of a Roman soldier who is tasked with investigating the crucifixion and the disappearance of Jesus's body from the tomb.

It's really very good and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys movies about Jesus and the Bible. An underappreciated movie for sure.
