Everytime I watch this film I am struck by how brilliantly lit it was. Cannot believe it did not win an Academy Award for Best Cinematography. Most of the interior scenes look like works of art. Amazing work.
shareI know, right? I haven't seen most divine use of chiaroscuro in a film. Almost every single shot looks like a painting.
shareA particular scene comes to mind, when Griet is walking with the butcher's son through what I suppose was some kind of park or forested area and the light was golden and subdued, and it was just so surreal and evocative...I felt like I could touch it as though that one scene was nothing more than a still, a canvas with paint that had been applied so lush and thick. The color and the light were just beautiful.

I love watching this film, for nearly every scene is set up to resemble a painting. It's stunning work.
shareAgree with you on the cinematography, which is just a dream of lighting and framing. The use of doors to frame the actors is a wonderful perspective as well. The only other film I recall that alludes to very well known paintings is Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon.

It reminds me of Zefferelli's Romeo & Juliet - especially the Capulet Ball scenes - where everyone at the party looks like they just fell out of a 15th century fresco. If you love the look of 17th century Dutch genre painting, then this movie will knock you out.

shareNostalghia is free with subtitles on youtube. Just be aware that it is an extreme arthouse effort by Tarkovsky. But literally every frame is a work of art, it’s that beautful....

It even had the trademark soviet era switching between black and white and color film stock. That lets you know it is soviet authentic. :D
Agreed, this is a great movie from a cinematography point of view. The use of color is amazing.
Although, overall, I would probably give the movie a 7.5 out of 10. The story is not exactly real intriguing but for the visuals, you just can't find anything better than this, especially for a period piece.
Although, I did watch another period piece not too long ago called The Current War (2017) that has really good sets like Pearl Earring. But not as good of course... worth a look though.
I'll have to check out The Duellists and Nostalghia to compare them....
Saw the current war. Very well done. It gives a good look at how the industrialists were duking it out for control of the electricity market.
It's amazing how ruthless greed can make people. :(

And speaking of greed, have you seen that movie Greedy staring Kirk Douglas and Michael J Fox? Hilarious movie.... It's about a family that's just waiting for a rich relative to die so they can collect his money. haha...
