Dumbledore' s a dick

I haven't read the book for a few years, but Dumbledore seemed super harsh in this movie- yelling a lot and being really impatient. In a word, he was unpleasant!...what was his deal?!

reply

He's being Head Masterly! He has to put on a good job of displaying that Hogwarts is a school with discipline. Also as host of the Tournament he has to try and avoid problems.

Don't forget, he cares for Harry and is scared that someone's trying to kill him.

reply

Seriously could Dumbledore have done anything to get Harry out of the tournament? Even he and Snape agree that it's a trap of some sorts and they then just allow things to play out. WTF? Great movie/book, way better than Azkaban but that part always bothered me

"He'll probably be okay! That's why we call him The Boy Who Lived Forever. That's what we call him, right?"

Seriously, though, I think it was something like an Unbreakable Curse, where you have to follow through or die. Since he didn't put his own name in, though, that'd be a pretty big flaw in the system.

reply

Harry has the option in all 3 tasks to drop out, Fleur did it in both the 2nd and the 3rd, why didn't they just have him do that?

reply

That would have made a lot of sense. It wouldn't have been as dramatic, that's why

reply

No. Harry Potter wanted to prove himself. He was almost put in Slytherin because of that. So opting out of the tasks, was out of question for him.

reply

No, Harry wouldn't have wanted to do that, but an adult who cared about him might have advised him to punt and survive. McGonnagal maybe, even Hagrid pushed the kid to win against much older and better-educated kids.

Dumbledore wouldn't do that, Dumbledore was indeed a "dick", in that everything he did was to carry on the fight against Voldemort. Protecting Harry wasn't a big priority for him, to put it politely, he would have wanted to spring Voldemort's trap and wait for his foe to reveal himself and his plans.

reply

Dumbledore and Snape decided to let the trap spring, with Harry as bait.

In the 7th book, it is made very clear that Dumbledore, although he cared for Harry, was playing the larger game of destroying Voldemort.

reply

When Dumbledore heard how Voldemort had used Harry's blood, he had a certain look in his eyes, indicating how his chess pieces were working the way he had wanted. I think Dumbledore had a certain machianveillian attitude towards defeating Voldemort, he was almost unfair, had he considered the feelings of others, had he questioned if Harry had wanted the burden?

The US government dropped a bombs in Japan for the same reasons, they killed people just to spare more lives so to speak, the end shall justify the means.

reply

Everyone was such a dick in this movie. Ron was an ass to both Harry and Hermione, then he and Harry were dicks to their ball dates. The entire school were jerks to Potter with the "Potter stinks" badges, even though they completely change their act after he passes the first ordeal. Then there's the reporter who keeps twisting everything people said for her stories.

reply

Lol, true. It should have been called Hogwarts and the Case of the Grumpies.

reply

And the one who wasn't a dick and actually a pretty cool guy, turned out to be the villain in the end. Everything was upside down here..

reply

Yeah, the problem stems mainly from the film's director, Mike Newell. The guy was not at all a fan of the franchise, as he even went so far as to say that he had not read or seen any of the previous installments of the series. My guess is because of his lack of familiarity with the source material, he just assumed that Dumbledore should be just like Gandalf.

Which is a shame, as I think Prisoner of Azkaban had the best portrayal of the character out of all the films, so it's definitely not the actor's fault for how they royally fucked his character up.

reply

Dumbledore being more like Gandalf totally makes sense to me now. I didn't understand why he was so weird in this movie.

reply

The reality is, at this point in the books, Dumbledore was no longer the fun, pleasant character with a twinkle in his eye.

Though, this movie may have taken a bit of license with his demeanor I admit:
