What if Gallo used a pseudonym to avoid unfair criticism
Let's imagine, just for a moment, that this film had the credits attributed as such: "written and directed by Eric Rohmer"
All the critics would talk about "Rohmer's edgy comeback". But when Gallo is credited for everything and also casts himself, then the critics get blinded by jealous views of Gallo's narcissism.
And let's just say, for the sake of the argument, that Gallo is narcissistic,
aren't all artists known to be like this to some degree?
Eric Rohmer made films just like this one. His critically acclaimed Le Rayon Vert is slow and very vérité (just like The Brown Bunny). Yet the ending doesn't compare to The Brown Bunny, not one bit.
Most of the critics who attacked this film forgot about how films were in the past. Is this really about the windshield shots?
If you like cinéma vérité, this is a great film. And Gallo's acting is so effin amazing. That last scene really drove home his pain.
The ending is what made this whole film work. And like all cinéma vérité, you need a ton of patience.
