Honestly, how many major actresses would do that, let alone any? Not only perform the act on screen, for real— but also have to do press for the movie, show up at festivals, Cannes, public screenings— knowing EVERY single time that all those people are going to see you giving a blow job onscreen by the time they've finished watching your movie. Same goes for Gallo, I guess, but the one on the giving-end of the act is more stigmatized (with all the backlash and negative press she got, obviously). Even if you hate the movie (which I don't, at all), you have to admit that she's ballsy.

I agree. This is a daring move. It was potentially a career ending move. Thankfully it didn't turn out that way.

But she did it because tha'ts what the film called for.

Oral sex happens millions of times a day over this planet.

It's not an evil act. Murdering some one is evil. But on any given day an actor will play a part, and shoot a human in a movie with no hesitation.

Sevigny broke a barrier here.

Sex is one of the most unnecessarily taboo topics in Western culture, and it PAINS me that we're so uptight about it. Sure, it's personal, but it's not something that's wrong or should be frowned on. Puritanical thinking is still on hold for many people, and sex on FILM is just blasphemous to many. But, honestly, who really cares? It was a bold move and a sad movie, and it all was appropriately tied together.

Sevigny did break a barrier if you think about it; sex in cinema had been done in European films prior, but (correct me if I'm wrong) I believe this was the first, or at least one of the first American films (non-porno, of course) to feature a real sex act. If that's not true, as I'm not sure whether another American film has done so, it was at the very least the first "name" actor/actress to perform an act in a film. So, within the US, that's a fairly big deal.

It didn't live up to the hype. The BJ was just a gimmick to attract people to a crap non-movie.

For that to be true, you have to assume most people are stupid enough to go and see a movie, just because it features a scene of on-screen oral sex! Maybe a hormonal teenager might be tempted; however, given how easy it is to access pornography on the Internet, I really doubt someone of such low intelligence is going to sit through 90 minutes of character observation just to see 2 minutes of hardcore sex.

I'm still convinced half the people writing negative reviews of this movie (or making endless blow-job references) haven't even seen it.

Wow. She's brave? Wish all the other cowardly actresses in Hollywood would get down on their knees and show a little courage too!

In fact, no need to bore us to death with riding around a track for 30 minutes to open the film. Just insert brave actresses in every film when they roll the credits at the end.

That way I can skip all the bad stuff in-between and just watch acts of courage.

You sir, seem to have come up with a great formula to survive a Vincent Gallo film!

LOL, seriously though, that was pretty ballsy for her to do. Didn't hurt her career much either.

I'll be honest here, I think Chloë Sevigny is a great actress, but I don't think this was too much of a stretch for her as your making it out to be. She's been getting nude in movies since she filmed her first one. Of course showing your tits compared to sucking a .... is a bit different, I think she was very fine with it. She's obviously very confident with her work, and thats a goood thing.

So, all those porn stars are just really brave girls starring in poorly scripted films with bad plots?

Good to know. Because seriously, I have seen porn films with better plots and better acting than this movie.

This wasn't about being brave on screen, this was a director who took advantage of an idiot actress who was willing to blow him for a role. The only difference here was he actually put it on screen instead of leaving it in private on the casting couch.

Neither one of them has much of a career after this movie.

Serious question: would it have been as brave of her if she'd done an equally explicit scene, but being on the receiving end of the oral sex? Meaning showing in close up the actor performing oral sex on her, to completion.
