Did you notice that he kept referring to his son as "the kid." Over and over again, the kid, the kid, the kid. I'm REALLY surprised that Dr. Phil didn't call him out on this, though I did miss about ten minutes of this episode so it's possible that he did during this time.

I don't mind the word when speaking in generalizations, like kids or even "that kid over there" or something like that, but when someone uses it in reference to their own child, over and over, it's definitely disassociated and impersonal. That guy was/is completely clueless.

I thought he did it to protect the child's identity. I've heard them do it on this show before. I think the most recent was when a girl accused her step father of abusing her and when they talked about his biological children they only said his/my daughters. .... I do know what you mean though about calling your children the kid and names like they.

There have been hundreds of people on that show that have children whose names are not said to protect them. Never, EVER, have I heard anyone constantly refer to their child as "the kid." They call them "my son" or "my daughter", not "the kid." The fact that they were protecting the name of the child surely would be why he didn't say his name, but him constantly saying "the kid" is just plain messed up.
