A Detective Story is a rip off

Director Alex Proyas first wrote the story of Dark City in 1990 as a detective story. The protagonist was a detective investigating a case that did not make logical sense, driving him insane as the evidence pointed to a larger, incomprehensible scheme.

I saw this movie Dark city (made one year before The Matrix) again a few days ago and it was like watching the Matrix, John Murdoch was Neo, a live that was made up and can be changed whenever the aliens wanted too, even whipe out memory just like in the Matrix, a living place that is not 'real' and made by aliens that can change it just like in the Matrix, the long black coats, he even had a phone call where someone said they where coming for him so he must run, really even that scene was used.

Actually, the Matrix was just following the Monomyth Hero's Journey just like countless stories before it.

Interesting trivia: The rooftop set from Trinity's escape from the Agents in the opening of the Matrix is a left over set from Dark City.

I actually thought it was too close to "Angel Heart"...

the story isn't very unique at all.

Usually I would call a ripoff something that blatantly copies a unique concept. The story in this case uses so many common detective story tropes that you can't really call it a rip-off of anything.
