this is just a guess, but i assumed it was a converted machine. They way it's eyes widen and shrink is very similar to the way the machines do. There's no way animals could survive that long without sunlight. (but then again neither could the humans, but that's an accepted plot hole)

You do realize there are animals that live in absolute darkness. To the point where they are blind because the ability to see is unnecessary.
